November '08 Writing Challenge - Survival

jeez, none of these stories have held my attention. i dunno if i'm gonna bother voting this month at this rate...

Oh, bite me!:rommie: Vote if you want-we had to struggle through this topic and these are the results-what did you expect? It's A Wonderful Life set to a Star Trek tune?

i'm just saying, i've only read your entry all the way through because the rest don't interest me, sure as shit i wasn't going to read some torture porn story...

If you didn't read it, how do you know it's torture porn?

I haven't read all the stories yet, haven't had time. Which one are you dismissing as porn?

Sorry we're not all as creative as you, captcalhoun, but your sniper series is perfectly geared toward the challenges. We just kind of muddle through with whatever is in our heads at the time.

A saying comes to mind that is very apt for this whole digression:

"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."

::grins:: I was just gonna tell him, "Each to their own; don't like it, don't read it." But I can't tell if he's actually being facetious and really doesn't mean that, or if he does mean it. You could read that post either way.

Gibraltar's i think. some Cardie started smacking some woman around and electrocuting her or something and i quit reading.

and yes, i am serious. i start reading the story and if it's not holding my interest after at least 3 paragraphs, i quit reading it.

Gibraltar's was about Pava Lar'ragos and largely took place in the Delta Quadrant.

The story you're thinking about is mirandafave's. It's VERY edgy, like some of the most intense nu-BSG scenes, and not a comfortable thing to read. But I would not say it crossed the line into porn.

So... what exactly was the point in posting to complain about it? I'm confused. You really could have just left him a comment if you didn't like it there, instead of complaining about it here. Likewise, you coulda just stopped reading and walked away. What was the point?

the point was, i am amazed that (as far as i am concerned) there's been only one good story this month that's held my interest, whereas other months have seen 2, 3 or even as many as 4 entries i've enjoyed.

don't like the comment, put me on ignore and kiss my shebs

Wow, down boy. Curb your bristling and indignant rage! I was just confused as to why you were complaining about it here. Mostly because, really, the only way you're ever gonna get the perfect story you wanna read is by writing it yourself. The only reason why I could see you complaining here is because you want to make people upset, just because they didn't write what you wanted them to.

But hey, again, each to their own. :techman:

captcalhoun, I'm asking this and I want an honest answer, not a sarcastic comeback. Do you think anyone on here writes as well as you?

Like Guinness, Johnny Walker or Stoli, in some cases!

Exactly. I can see people not liking MY style--I don't write for everybody's tastes and never will, and that's fine with me. The mass-bashing, however...that's just obnoxious.

But frankly, the cantankerous attitude is getting old. If it's not this, it's complaining that his stories aren't getting enough comments, etc. Writing is also a bit of a customer-service act to win potential readers, and that sort of behavior is not going to endear those who might be thinking about reading. I know it doesn't me.

Anyway, I've said my piece and no purpose will be served by my saying anymore. It's out and it's done--take it or leave it...but it needed to come out.

Yeah. I'm kinda lost as to how someone wanting others to treat their work kindly thinks that bashing everyone else is gonna be enough to do it. ::blinks:: That... is one strange idea of authorship. Frankly, no one's entitled to feedback, anymore than the reader is entitled to tell the author what to write. Generally, though, if you write well and treat others with courtesy, you'll find people more willing to give your stories a chance.

And, really, one of the better ways to get good feedback is to give it.

Kinda calling everyone bad because they're not writing what you personally like isn't exactly in line with good feedback. I mean, he could have said, "These stories didn't really grip me; I felt that they were lacking action, given that I prefer actions stories to character-based pieces." That would be honest concrit.

i think several people write better stories than me, i'm just saying none of them are holding my attention. they may be good stories, but i don't know because they're not holding my attention and i'm not reading them.

as for my stories, i've hardly ever complained about not getting comments. i'm more likely to complain that the wonderful comments i get don't translate into votes come the poll.

and y'all don't have to worry, after this month, i'm quitting taking part in these challenges, so you'll only see me making comments on the blue-moon occasions when a new Supermax story goes up.

hasta la vista, pendejos

*Waves mod stick around and reminds people to stick to comments about stories, not writers.* (post not poster)

Play nice folks. We've had a few arguments about the challenge over the years, but it's such a feature of the forum, don't spoil it.

I think the challenges would be poorer for you not participating in them. I don't always agree on your choices of material-but I love to read what you write-and I suspect many others do too.

apologies, Kathy.

*holds out cuddly teddy toy*

Mistral: the simple fact is, i'm trying to write my own book and i'm also working in a job, try to have time for other hobbies and interests and the fan-fic is getting squeezed out. so, it's going bye-bye so that i can spend time writing something i might get published and actually get paid for.

Good luck with that, I'm also working on a novel but it is not going very far.
