November '08 Writing Challenge - Survival

Our theme for the November 2008 writing challenge is Survival.

Stories should focus on a desperate survival situation: A shuttle crash, being lost on an alien planet, special forces training in the Amazon, etc. - you create your own scenario. You may choose to focus on an individual or a group. Use any Star Trek era, canon or fan-fic characters. Let's see how your players do, living off the land with a survival knife and their wits.

Here's a few rules . . .

  • 3000 words or less
  • NO holodeck scenarios - REAL life and death struggles, if you please!
  • Whether or not your character(s) are rescued or survive is up to you.
  • Entries are due by midnight (GMT) November 30.
  • By the way, no one gets voted off the island!
GOOD LUCK!

Does this have to be primitive survival, or does any situation where one's life is on the line apply?

I was thinking primitive conditions, as opposed to (for example) two starships throwing broadsides at one another with their crews hoping to survive. However, as benevolent judge of the challenge, I shall be flexible. ;)

I see. Well...I'll have to do some thinking on what I do with this one, if I have anything in my plotlines that I can enter or not.

I know I have a few such situations, but none of those stories have been written to that point yet. Still, I'll think about it and see if I can come up with something.

Its ok to do a one-off just to enter the contest, y'know.

LMAO! I get the feeling that some of us are frighteningly obsessive about making sure that everything we write is cohesive and fits in the same universe. That, or wanna kill two birds with one stone.

That's hard for me to do...my instincts tend to be that all of my stories need to fit together. ;)

We'll see what happens, though--I've got one little idea brewing in the back of my mind, but I'm still trying to decide if I want to do it or not.

I don't think this one is right for Ashley Turner, but another character has presented itself. I will attempt this one I think, provided RL doesn't dump on me again. I was a third of the way through last month's when everything went totally pear-shaped.

I hate it when that happens (which is often for me these days...) - bad enough you've got to deal with crap in real life without having half a story itching at your brain!

Hmm...well I have an idea...great something else to distract me from finishing Vesta

I shall be good to Mistral this month and try and avoid the last minute entry

Thank you, biatch! Much appreciated. Now go read the latest chapter of my ongoing. I slaved over a hot stove to cook it up!;)

OK...I think I'm going to attempt an entry this weekend, though it'll be up to TLR to decide, after it's posted, if it qualifies.
