Novel-based fanfiction query

Not sure quite where to put this, so I put it here because, while it's not a fanfic, it does deal with fanfiction. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to 'fanfic' ST novel series like New Frontier, ect. or create fanfic based on characters introduced in a ST novel. The reason I ask is this: I recently finished the DS9 Relaunch novel "Rising Son", and was really intrigued by the crew of the Even Odds, the ship that Jake Sisko ends up on in the Gamma Quadrant. Since there haven't been any further published stories using the characters, I figured the opening was there to create a fanfiction-based 'series' around them. However, I'm not sure if this would work, so I decided to come here and get people's opinions.

There are definitely fanfics dealing with novel series such as New Frontier and many authors incorporate themes, characters, and ideas from ST novels and series such as the Rhiannsu series and the DS9 Relaunch novels. If you've got some ideas regarding that ship and crew and stories that you want to tell, I'd say go for it.

My fan-fic has used characters from NF, SCE and has referenced at least one DS9-R character and has also included an entry in the Gateways events and a 'Captain's Table' story.

Freeman and his SO team meet Calhoun and Zak Kebron during the Selelvian war.

Freeman and his SO team carried out a mission with the SCE cast during the Dominion War.

Vaughn, Calhoun and Gold all appear in 'Gateways: Hard Contact' during the holo-briefing which was used in the TNG, DS9R and NF novels. I added Freeman and Gold into the scene.

I've also used elements from GKN, VGD and the A Time To mini-series...

Thanks for the responses. Another problem I ran into was coming up with specific stories that I could tell about the crew. The only thing I was able to come up with was to set the 'series' in the aftermath of the events depicted in "Rising Son", and to involve the Dominion and their pursuit of the crew as thieves and terrorists. Anybody have any suggestions on that front?

Write a chapter that sets the telling of the story long after Jake Sisko's encounter with the Even Odds crew (years, decades, etc. later) from the point of view of the last surviving member of the crew as an elderly politician or simply a retiree telling the story to someone close to that character.

(A grandchild or someone that may or may not be implied to be technically important / canon further along in the timeline such as a pre-adolescent Chef Daniels or 13 year old Captain Braddox, et cetera.)

Then use a story-telling device that begins with the elderly character relating the story to the younger character, but tells it to him/her beginning just after their encounter with Jake Sisko.

I incorporate anything I feel is canon-realistic, fanfic or the real deal. I think you should write what ever feels right.
I just run with the ideas and make sure it feels canon to me.
That's the one thing I try to stay on target with.

I have a similar issue in fitting my story in with the timeline of published books. My Star Trek:Chimera series is set after the dominion war. One of them, "Holy War" is about the three races that worship the wormhole aliens, which if memory serves were introduced in the same book you were referencing, "Rising Son" However, I don't know if any more has been written, and I don't want to step on anyone's toes.

Well, I just looked, and it seems I'm going to have to change my view of the Ascendants... Or will I??? **gears begin to turn**
