Hi all! I’m watching TOS Where No Man Has Gone Before and saw something I‘ve never seen before. After The Enterprise has it’s run in with the barrier Spock is looking over the ESP medical records of the injured.

When he gets to the file about Gary Mitchell it recounts an earlier mission on Deneb 4 where Mitchell “reportedly showed a marked ability of sensing the telepathic communications used by the native inhabitants”. Even going so far as to in 3 cases carrying on long telepathic communication with selected Deneb 4 natives.

This was news to me. I had no idea Gary was that telepathic. Nor do I remember it being stated that Deneb 4 inhabitants were telepathic. I wonder if he makes it into the movie if that will be remembered. I would doubt it…

Nothing big but new to me.

I recall a line of dialogue in the episode about he had one of the highest ESP ratings on the ship, but I don't remember the line about the people of Denab 4. Sorry. I do remember though Trek Uncut (it was that old, old, old series that showed the uncut episodes of TOS on Sci-Fi about 15 years ago) had more dialogue about his telepathic abilities.

The bit about Deneb IV isn't exactly dialogue, it's text on Gary's ESP chart.

Whether being able to receive telepathy from a telepathic species counts as "being telepathic" is debatable. Riker could listen to half-Betazoid transmissions, at least after having been suitably intimate with the speaker. OTOH, a full Betazoid was required for making sense of the telepathic talk of the Cairn in "Dark Page". Gary could be at either end of that spectrum: a near-complete muggle, or somebody nearly capable of independent telepathy himself.

Gary Mitchell's ESPer ratings were the highest on the ship. I'd say that puts him close to independent telepathy, at least more so than anyone else on the ship. It's also the reason he was affected more than anyone else.

So what if a ship full of fools went through that barrier and survived. Everybody's a little bit psychic. Would'nt they all wind up superpowerful and ultra egotistical? Plot for a movie?
