Northeast Frankenstorm, hurricane Sandy.

^Actually, you are full of what the blowhards on news are telling you. I suspect that's the case of most of the wind.

If you go with the NOAA Technical Paper 40 storm curves, it's about a 10-year, 24-hour storm. In this case the storm hydrograph is going to be well longer than 24 hours.

You would need about twice as much rain in a shorter time span to be a once in a century storm.

Anything for ratings and getting old ladies (aka my mom) to watch The Weather Channel and CNN for days on end.

That's an interesting comment.

I spoke to my Dad yesterday (he lives in Connecticut) and he basically said the same thing. His opinion is that it's going to be bad storm, and he's prepared, but the news is acting like it's the end of the world, freaking everyone out.

Since I'm way on the other side of the United States, I don't have an opinion on how bad it is/will be. I just thought it was telling that I called him all worried about what was going to happen, and he basically told me don't worry about it.

I hope he's right, for everyone's sake. I guess it's hard to balance prudent caution and hysteria. I'd rather folks take too many precautions than not enough.

Stay safe.

In terms of size the tropical storm force winds extend to it is a once in a century storm for an Atlantic hurricane. The same in terms of the pressure. The only one that had a lower pressure happened in the 30s and that may be topped if the storm gets a bit stronger.

However, this isn't a CAT 4 or CAT 5 on its way to hit NYC and bring a storm surge that would likely turn a major U.S. city into NO after Katrina. In that way it is not a storm of the century nor will it bring as much rain as a storm would need to in order to be a storm of the century in that way.

You are right on about the wind, did not really think of that. I tend to look at storms from a hydrology standpoint, as I design stormwater management systems for work, which only deals with runoff, not wind.

 I wish I'd thought of this. But it would just blow off the porch!

It's raining cats and dogs right now, and the wind is really picking up. So far it doesn't seem too bad where I am- no worse than the summer's derecho.

Yup. I check the National Weather Service and local newspaper sites every few hours. They tell me everything I actually need to know. All the rest is hype and drives me crazy.

WRC in D.C. is covering the storm constantly- no regular programming. I'm pretty well informed without freaking out. :p

And the President is on right now, basically telling us to hunker down, pay attention to evac orders, etc...Keep Calm and Carry On!

It's starting to get windy here in northern nj. 5-10mph sustained with gusts up to the 15-20mph range. Not really bad on rain yet though.

I am all for reasonable precautions and prudence. I got a full tank of gas, canned goods, and my water purification kit I use when I go camping all set. I just don't like rampant paranoia.

Understood. That's pretty much how Dad sees it as well.

Best of luck, to you and everyone.

Shit just got real in Virginia- Potomac Mills is closed. :p When the biggest outlet mall in the state closes, you know it's serious.

I'm sitting here at home, bored out of my mind while the storm slowly intensifies outside. My company closed their Maryland-based offices in a rather shocking move (we typically don't close for anything - ever) so I got a surprise day off from work. Except that I usually do stuff when I have a day off.... and there's nowhere to go!
