What we need is to refer to the original script. Surely there's somebody on this BBS who's purchased a copy from Lincoln Enterprises/Roddenberry.com and can check what it says?

Blish commonly used much earlier drafts than the final shooting draft, which is what Lincoln Enterprises/Roddenberry.com sells. I found an online reference the other day that stated that the versions Blish used no longer seem to exist.

I've said this before...

Would it have been too much for five minutes research into Sikhism?

Khan - Not a Sikh name.
Noonien - Not even a Punjabi name.
Singh - Sikh or Rajput name.

In Sikh society all males are given the name Singh, but it is always the second name. Male Sikh names follow the format of Given name, Singh, then caste name. Females all take the middle name Kaur. Many Sikhs drop the caste name, preferring to be known for their religious identity solely, hence the Prime Minister of India is Manmohan Singh.

Khan is possible, if he were a muslim from Pakistani Punjab, but even then that sounds more like a surname than a forename. Unless it is a title, as some of the books imply with Khanate and such.

As for a conjugation of cultures to explain the name. Highly unlikely, certainly not realistic for someone to be born of both cultures and able to celebrate that dual heritage with a name, especially given the antagonistic past between Sikhs and Muslims. Certainly not now, and definitely not in the timeframe for Khan's birth and ascendance.

As for Noonian/Noonien. It's just a sound isn't it, an inarticulate utterance of annoying nasality. It has no meaning or weight to it. It may as well be 'Blah Blah Blah'

I have the script book from Roddenberry.com, and it reproduces an early draft of the script, where it's spelled "Ericssen."

Anybody have the shooting draft?

Yeah, it's right up there with "canon" and "rogue" as one of the most misspelled words on the internet.

Not that I'm sensitive on this point or anything . . . .

The one that bugs me (okay, one of the ones that bug me) is people spelling Gandhi as "Ghandi." Which I guess is an overcorrection by people who've figured out how to spell "Khan." The thing is, the H isn't silent. It's actually pronounced "Gand-hee." (Well, more or less; more precisely, the final vowel is aspirated.) So it's not like the spellings are phonetically equivalent.

The December 13, 1966 Second Revised Final draft of "Space Seed" consistently spells the name as Noonien.
