I have experienced a lot of accents in the US, and have moved around enough that my accent is a curious mashup of Southern, Midwestern, and Alaskan accents. Living in New Jersey has made me a) louder and b) more profane.

We in the OTHER valley (San Gabriel) considered it the slang of idiots, since they couldn't speak a coherent sentence.

Born in LA, raised in Pasadena and lived thereabouts for 37 years--including Azusa for 2 years before school, then Sierra Madre w/ Hubby for a number of years. Moved to Fresno 12 yrs ago for Hubby's job.

I was born and raised in Nebraska. I didn't used to have an accent (being from NE, we have none ), but like I said I watch so much Corner Gas (and Red Green) that I seem to have spontaneously become Canadian in my speechings.

I was born in Los Angeles proper, and then raised in La Canada. I went to St. Francis High School, right there on the border with Pasadena.

La Canada is a beautiful city. I believe my high school played yours in football. I was PHS Class of 1980. That limits me to, what, the female portion of 435 students?

aside from watching Fresh Prince of Bel Air... which i doubt is a realistic comparison, i wouldn't be able to tell you what a Philadelphia accent sounded like lol

I posted a video earlier. It's probably harder for a non-American to spot the differences since you hear R's being pronounced (it's the only rhotic accent on the east coast, so it probably sounds closer to the "standard" accent). On the other hand, I've been told I pronounce words strangely in the past.

Only rhotic accent on the east coast? Are you just referring to the northeast? My NC family pronounce their r's and so does my Florida family.

I was referring to generalities. How do their accents compare to what's usually present in the area? Most southern accents are non-rhotic, but I can't literally speak for every single person in the south.

I'm pretty turned off by the Cajun accent, sometimes it hard to understand what they are saying in French or English. I like some Southern accents depended on where they are from in the south, but I love to hear Shelby Foote talk about the Civil War in Ken Burn's Civil War or just hearing DeForest Kelley speak in interviews or in the movies and TV shows. Now Texas has a lot of different accents. You a lot of people from the north moving down to Texas, you have a growing Hispanic population in Texas as well and of course you some Native Americans there that have their own accents.

I was born in Oxnard, then spent about half my childhood in Ventura and Simi Valley. I still have a grandmother living near Ojai.

Oxanrd--home to THE best strawberries in the world, according to my dad. He used to pick some up when he'd have to go there for work, if it was strawberry season. Something about sunny days and cooling ocean breezes keeping the berries from burning. (He was a rocket scientist--everything got analyzed.)

I'm reminded of the difference in useage between Northern California and Southern California. there's a definite change between the San Francisco bay Area and the Los Angeles basin...and if one goes further into the foothills (The Gold Country or around Redding) the accent can almost become Texan in nature..

I think I have the non-accent thing down for the most part, being from the midwest...

Midwest accents are kind of hard to pigeon-hole because they can vary depending on who you're talking to, and it doesn't matter if a person is from a rural or urban background sometimes. Certain words can be pronounced differently than their spellings:

Missouri (pronounced "Missoura")
wash (pronounced "worsh")
kind of (pronounced "kinda")
ask (pronounced "axe")
help (pronounced "hope")

The governor of Missouri (Jay Nixon) does. Being in St. Louis, I hear all sorts of different variations. So it depends on who you're talking to and where they came from.

I think Missouri barely qualifies as "the midwest." Hell, I'm from Illinois, and basically anything in the lower half of the state is generally considered the South.
