Noisy DVD drive.

hi all, when plang some of my films on my dvd/vcr combo, some of the dvd's with make a noise when loading, and somtimes during the film itself drowning out the speach. any help on combating this problem.

Assuming it's the device's fan activating, pointing a table fan across the back of the thing may help.

Yeah, option C doesn't make much sense, really. I have a $29 Durabrand DVD player from Wal-Mart, as well as a $59 DVD/VCR combo from Target, and both are very quiet.

Anyhoo, flux, it sounds like the ball bearing in your player's fan might be sticking. A tiny, tiny dash of WD-40 on it will let it run smoothly for a short while longer, but you should probably replace the fan, if it's replaceable and not a part of the power supply. If it is, then ouch. Until you can replace it, I would definitely take Lindley's suggestion. It would take some of the load off of the fan itself and it wouldn't have to run so hard.

See if you can determine where the sound is coming from. It could be the fan, as others have mentioned, or it could be coming from the drive itself. If the noise is coming from the drive, you might want to check the warranty status of the player because it will be difficult--if not impossible--to fix.

It could be too that some of your disks may be older and have some slight scratching or need to be cleaned. This has happened to me before and when I clean the backs of the DVDs they tend to work better and I don't get that annoying sound.

In some way the discs are slightly unbalanced (could be age, a slight warping of the disc; or even the way the disc was painted with the program info on the top side etc. - or even if you slapped an adhesive label on a disk yourself). Whenever the disc 'spins up' to be read (and CD and DVD discs spin fast in any drive) that's the noise you're hearing.

As others have said, either turn up the volume; or if they are self made discs; DON'T put an adhesive (or taped on) label on the disk and instead use a proper permanent ink marker to label the Disc.
