Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

SPOILER ALERT IF YOU'VE NOT SEEN THE FILM

Anyone else note that Scotty tested his transwarp transporter on 'Admiral Archer's Beagle'.

A not-so-subtle nod (and dig, perchaps?) to the unlamented prequel show?

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

Lamented to me, and yes, I did pick it up. A pretty silly reference IMO.

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

Yes, I picked it up. But that is actually one of the things that are known for quite some time now. I recall that it was spoiled when the press got to see some selected scenes.

Personally, I liked the reference, by the way. I think it was cute.

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

I avoid spoilers like the plague (learned that lesson after watching First Contact for the first time and realizing I already knew the entire thing inside out- that was the first and last time for me) so I went it not knowing anything about anything.

I liked the reference too- a little love for the prequel made my fanboy heart sing.

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

It's a cute little nod, but given that Enterprise takes place about a century before this movie (which the writers may or may not have been aware of), I think we have to logically (:vulcan:) assume that Scotty's referring to some other Archer (possibly a descendant) who happened to have a beagle.

Yeah, yeah, I hate to be the "continuity guy", but someone had to say it.

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

Well, even if it wasn't our Archer and our beagle, it'd still be a pretty nice homage. ;)

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

Well, considering McCoy's advanced age in the pilot of TNG, it's conceivable Archer lived to a very old age, and kept getting new Beagles to replace Porthos.

I think it's more logical to assume that they just didn't know or didn't want us to think about it (which goes for a few things in the film)... :klingon:

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

Who wants to think that TNG and DS9 were discarded, but Enterprise wasn't?

It was "nuArcher".

If "nuArcher" turns up in a sequel, who should play him?

Really, I don't get what's the problem here. Why does it really have to be the Archer we know to be a reference to Enterprise?

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

In the not-so-canon on screen data from IaMD, it is said Admiral/UFP Prez Archer died the day following the launching of the Enterprise...
Hell, we're not even sure it's the same Archer. Could be a relative, could be not. Could be just what it is: an in-joke.
Now did that Admiral Archer literally turn his back to Scotty when he sentenced him to be exiled on Delta Vega? :p

I think it could still be the same Archer...but certainly not the same beagle!

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

I am waiting for the beagle to rematerialized in the next film.

This is all foreshadowing of Scotty's own future where he is stuck in the transporter for decades..

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

[McCoy voice] "It's Archer's revenge for all those beagles he lost!!!" [/McCoy voice]

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

All the unseen history Archer must surely have been involved in, and all they can reference is his name and the fact he owned a beagle. History really hasn't been kind to the first Enterprise Captain has it? Simply because the new film's writers weren't all that interested.

I was hoping for a background graphic. His portrait hanging somewhere. Overhearing a teacher mentioning the Romulan War in an Academy Class. "Who was the Captain of the NX-01?" A question to which Chekov answers with a Russian name but is then corrected...

How about some Andorian background cadets? Enterprise was the easiest one to connect to and show some progression of. Even the uniforms on the U.S.S. Kelvin don't seem to fit any evolvution between the NASA inspired jumpsuit and the Pike era, two piece sweater look. Clearly more influenced by TNG of all eras.

When I thought of the best reference they could do, it involved Scott Bakula in old age make-up - a cameo role on a conducted inspection tour. The last thing I wanted was my show to be the butt of Simon Pegg's stand-up routine. I'm trying not to think of the animal cruelty issue here.

Oh dear, you were really hoping for waaaaaaay too much. Remember this is the show, in Paramount's eyes, that almost killed the franchise. Why on earth would they give so much screen time to a homage for a "failed" show?

Perfectly reasonable to expect a handing over of the torch from its most recent holder, in my view... in addition to somebody absent from Trek for 18 years.

But you're right, it does seem as if even Paramount had more time for that other 4 year failure of niché Sci Fi, Battlestar Galactica.

Are you crazy? Nimoy has personified Star Trek. He was there in the first pilot, is know the world over and has been involved in some way, whether it be the shows, movies books or conventions for 45 years. How on earth can you bring Bakula alongside him as a comparable?

Hopefully you don't use that line in court, otherwise I could get off Scott free! :p

I happen to believe in the tradition. At the beginning of a new generation, somebody from the immediate past gets to handover the keys. Doesn't matter to most general audiences, but it's nice for those of us who hung in there. If that makes me crazy... well, I've been a fan of Star Trek for over 30 years, and called far worse.

It would be nice to visit a message board every once in a while without it ending in a "how high can you piss" competition.
