Nobody owns Star Wars!

So we have this friend. We learned a few weeks ago, much to our dismay, that this friend has never see Star Wars. We decided that this must be rectified, so we were going to make her watch it tomorrow.

One problem...

Nobody owns it on DVD! I have asked 20 or so people, and nobody has it.

Oh, we all own the Trilogy that came out VHS way back when, but nobody has a working VCR anymore. In the interim, none of us ever bothered to upgrade to the DVD (I'm guessing most of us were unimpressed by the "improvements" Jucas made when he re-released them). And now, most of us who do want to buy it are waiting for the Blu-Ray.

So here we are, a bunch of nerds with no Star Wars. I'm tempted to buy the trilogy tomorrow, but I don't really know if it's worth the money since I'm just going to buy the Blu-Rays a year from now.

Any place sell used DVDs, you can get them really cheap. At least buy the first one to give your friend an idea what it's about.

EDIT: I don't have it on DVD either, but I at least know where I can still borrow a working DVD player.

My friend has a copy; you should borrow his. His name's Net F. Lix. ;)

Email him if you want a pizza roll.

Sounds like you need better friends. ;)

But no! These are people that I would absolutely expect to own Star Wars. It blows my mind that they don't. Hell, it blows my mind that I don't own it! I own so many scifi movies and TV shows. I can't believe I never bought Star Wars!

Strange.

If you pick up a used disc as others suggest, try to find the newer release that includes the original version alongside the SE.

I lot of people I know have the original trilogy... but few actually own the PT.
That actually puts the PT in demand... I loan them out frequently.

I thought this was going to be a a thread about George Lucas putting Star Wars in the public domain. I mean, my head would have exploded, but that would've been pretty cool.

You don't have any brick and mortar video stores where you live? I know they're a dying breed but still...

Every video store, aside from a single remaining Blockbuster, has closed, and I have no intention of spending Blockbuster prices just to rent Star Wars.

Are you sure it will only be a year? They haven't announced a date yet. If you care that much about SW, I'd buy the DVDs now. You can probably get them for cheap.

If SW ever makes it to Blu-Ray, *then* start worrying. But that could take years. NOTHING is ensured until and unless they start showing up on store shelves. Until then, it's all vaporware.

We will probably sooner get the LOTR Extended cuts on Blu before SW anyway. And those haven't been announced either.

Considering you own it on VHS, it's technically legal to download a BitTorrent copy for "digital backup", isn't it?

I thought they were supposed to come out next November. Or is that just a rumor?
