No Smoking!

OK, can you say 'neurotic'? What exactly is a spy photo of Winona Ryder, avec long raincoat, puffing away on a ciggy going to reveal to us 'rabid Trekkies?'

I can see the threads now. "Smoking in Trek XI!?!?!", "How much would you pay for a blurry cellphone picture of a starfleet cigarette?", "I think that gold line on the cigarette is an Enterprise delta!"

I think it's great that he's got the lid on so tight.

I agree. To me it's stunning that there is still absolutely no leaking of plot going on. We know nothing but what JJ has told us himself and that's pretty remarkable considering that they've been filming for a few weeks now.

It truly has been amazing that everything has been kept as quiet as it has. It would seem JJ is taking this project just a little seriously...

My understanding this is par for the course for Abrams. He likes keep things shrouded in mystery. He's doing the right thing.

We shouldn't ideally know much about the film until we sit down to watch it. Of course by then we'll know everything anyhow - but we shouldn't a year before its realised know the plot... ect.

We need Winona Ryder in the sequel to Thank You For Smoking:

Thank You For Stealing. ;)

It's certainly impressive how effective Abrams has been in keeping things under wraps. If memory serves, the scripts for Insurrection and Nemesis were circulating the web at around this point. The way things are going, we'll be lucky if we see the script leaked at all...

I don't want the script leaked. A plot summary, fine. But not the actual script!

Hopefully they'll start releasing some actual official photos of the stars in makeup, even if it's just a head-shot with no uniform visible.

Abrams is probably scared to death of any pictures leaking out 'cause then people will see that it sucks, just like he's scared to let anyone see the cloverfield monster ahead of time

No. But I'm sure it makes you feel good to think that.
Ever hear of building suspense? You just don't drop everything on your audience - its perfectly ok to help feed the thirst for your product...

And this is also the usual manner Abrams (and perhaps more and more of this generation of film makers) does things.

In a monster movie you also use the monster sparsely not in your face so it makes even more sense regarding "Cloverfield" since half the movie is about the "shark" coming out of the water to eat you.

Actually, the Enterprise already has a "smoking section":

Need a light, Winona?

How badly can it suck? It's not like he's doing another TNG movie in the tradition of "Insurrection" or "Nemesis" so he's got a leg up from the get-go.

Well the secrecy is achieving it's goal in my case. I'm very excited for this movie and have been lapping up any scrap of information quick as I can.

I really, really, want to see the Enterprise. Hopefully the rumors about the teaser are true and we'll get a glimpse of the old girl in a month or so.

Think. I mean really think... Before you post again.

Abrams - likely NOT scared to death.

The pictures! My GOD! The pictures!

:D

I think splitting this forum in two is in order.

We could have a sub-forum that isolates those that already know what a dismal failure Trek XI will be. No ifs, buts or whys - we're talking the camp that KNOWS it's going to suck.

Because it will suck.

And the other forum will discuss the absurd possibility that this nuttier - than - a - fruitcake endeavor might have a chance of being a fantastic hit. I know what you're thinking; if a psychotic Picard clone couldn't satisfy the box office, what chance does a back - to - basics approach featuring the iconic characters that define Trek hope to offer?

Fuck me gently with a chainsaw if I do know; I don't protest to.

But Cogley knows.
