No Real News = Funny, Sarcastic Posts

<SNIPPED FOR LENGTH>

In short, if you don't like the humor, get the fuck out of the thread.

If you think it is warnable, hit the "Notify Moderator" button and move on. That's what the Moderators are here for. They know how to do their job. They aren't looking for advisory opinions or amicus curiae to explain to them how to understand what is staring them right in the face. If you post your two cents on how "un-funny" the thread is, all you are going to do is: A) de-rail the poor bastard's thread; B) suck the fun right out of the thread; and C) make yourself look like a humorless ass.

Besides, some threads start out retarded, but then when subsequent posters come in and get the ball rolling, the thread really takes off. Let the ball start rolling! Don't take out a nail and punch a hole in the ball.

If all else fails, use the "Ignore the User" feature and you'll never have to be bothered by that individual again.

It's not that hard, people.

The reason we are all here is for information and for entertainment. Why else would we come here?

I personally would argue that the main reason we come here is for community. We can get the information somewhere else. There are certainly more reliable sources elsewhere. We come here to bond with one another; to bounce ideas off one another; to debate the finer points of Trek; and to blow off a little steam. Most of all, to have fun. If it's fun, we keep coming back. If it's not, we find other things to do to entertain us.

Keep in mind that if every complainer gets his wish, we'll have a forum that has maximized order and mimimized fun. That cannot be the goal.

This is not a society where we must be forced to get along. This is a place that we voluntarily choose to come to because we enjoy it. That makes entertainent more important than absolute order. If you aren't entertained, roll up your sleeves and contribute. If that doesn't work, wait a while and then try again. If you find yourselves trying to hard to enjoy yourself, you are in the wrong place (this applies to relationships too, by the way).

The way I see it, if the community is enjoying itself, and no one is being harmed, then the board is a success.

(And I do not define harm as someone thinking that a joke isn't funny.)

Sometimes the place gets a little spammy. So what? As long as we are spammy about Star Trek XI (and not that girl we have a crush on), then we are still in the right place.

As Howard Stern has always said to his many detractors, [paraphrasing] "If you don't like it, change the station. There are plenty of other stations to listen to. Or even better, turn the radio off and go outside."

 The fact that you said this all so seriously in a thread makes this by far your funniest post :guffaw:

The problem is, someone starts a funny post or maybe a couple do. Then everyone jumps on the fucking bandwagon and 95% of the stuff isn't funny and of course, people try to see how juvenile they can be.

One of the thing that most frustrates me online is that if something is done, everyone has to ape it and they overdo it. Big time. And then they whine when folks say "enough already".

I'm almost 50 years old, and if I want poo-poo and sex jokes (bad ones at that,) I'll go volunteer to work at a middle school.

Guys...listen to the Bonz. The Bonz is wise (not to mention being the board-runner).

I am A-okay with the humor threads in here...but the past couple of days things have gotten out of control with them...and some of the threads are resorting to the juvenile and/or gross.

Please understand that we are TRYING to maintain a good balance in here. We don't want to be a bunch of hard-asses...but there are limits to what we can allow in what is generally considered to be a forum for serious fans.

Once again - we GET IT. No news = impatient and bored fans who want to keep themselves occupied with a few laughs.

But let's use a LITTLE digression and self-control here, gang. And let's PLEASE think of our fellow posters - some of whom are mighty annoyed when they open a forum that is almost completely overrun with joke threads.

Joke threads in moderation are great - I've had alot of laughs in here myself and I'm happy to have them.

But what we have had the past couple of days can no longer be considered 'moderate'. And we really need to dial it back a bit in here.

I have rarely ever started a post in the Star Trek XI forum, if ever. I challenge you to check the record on this.

Compare this against the multitudinous parody posts and others being made by certain posters repeatedly. I am offended, that my intention... to go back and edit George Takei is Nogura to create discussion on the topic... is now not made available.

I find it unfair to be called out, when I'm not the offenders you need to be dealing with. I've been a poster here for over seven years under this handle, and I go back farther than that. I strongly wish to see you reconsider this, or at least change the tenor of your comments.

It is unfair to single me out as a fall guy for your inability to keep in check posts that were simply ludicrous.

George Takei actually would be logical in the role of Nogura, known to have been a friend to Kirk's parents in the novel continuity. I'm also aware that Orci's aware of that...

Big difference between that and poopoo jokes or recasting TrekBBS. Those remain open.

Closing threads is the old reactionary TrekBBS coming back to the way it was years ago when trollkingdom really started to take off.

If you don't want to read a parody thread, or a joke thread, or a speculative thread, or a Jayson thread... SKIP OVER IT.

Censor it, and you're just being a fascist.

^ It isnt aimed at you personally, sturmde. I even mentioned that in your thread. I don't think the mods handed out a warning for it. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had you posted that a few weeks ago you might have got away with it.

Problem is, that may be the straw that breaks the camels back. The forum is full of this shit now.

You have to have some content in the thread though. You can't just post one line with a fake link.

That's not funny. It's annoying.

Sorry, but it is.

Oh my.

And congratulations on your promotion to moderator, as is shown by your need or desire to lecture, both here, and in the thread.

I agree that these parody and joke posts have gotten out of hand. I know there isn't a lot of new information about the movie coming out right now, but what little information we ARE getting is becoming increasingly difficult to find due to all the parody/joke threads cluttering up the place. I don't mind the occasional joke thread, but surely you can have too much of a good thing? I also enjoy the more serious speculative discussions about various aspects of the movie, and it's becoming an annoying process for me to locate those threads when I have wade through all the joke/parodies ones at the same time.

Well, George Takei as Nogura actually is relevant to Star Trek XI casting.

What the hell does "David Cross is Tobias" have to do with Trek XI?

It's pretty damn reactionary when crap like that still remains open, and the one thing I post is locked within a few minutes of my posting it.

Oh, now come on.

There was no content whatsoever. It's not even a fine line. That's spam. In fairness, I was going to post my rant in the David Cross thread earlier, but I held back cos I didn't want to seem like a moaning git. That one needs closing too IMO. Which is just my personal opinion as I am not a moderator

And you can't come in and go "Oh, I was going to go back and put some content in".

No-one was having a go at you. I know you are probably pissed for being the one called out, but you can't really argue here.

Listen, I'm a big supporter of the parody threads. As many others have said, there have been many that were good. However, it's these reactionary threads that are getting old. The parody threads that were developed because the mods said it was okay and the "everyone else is doing it" mentality kicked in. Every serious topic that has come up has had an echoing parody topic that usually has 1-2 lines of material in it that aren't even worth reading.

Again, I was a big proponent of the "Let the parodies stay" campaign, but we have honestly blown it. I wouldn't blame the mods for a parody shut-down.

How is George Takei as Nogura actually is relevant to Star Trek XI casting unless he is actually going to be Nogura? I genuinely am curious. For some reason I can access Trek BBS at work where I am now, but Trekmovie is blocked. So when people said that the Trekmovie link was a fake and your thread was a joke, I had no reason to doubt them, and I couldn't check for myself.

I groaned when I saw that thread from STARTREK11, but since the title was so stupid, I had no doubt it was yet another silly joke thread and just rolled my eyes and skipped it. The less obviously titled ones I find more annoying.

sturmde, I know you are pissed at jon1701 for butting in. And I know also that I was not the one to close your particular thread.

But the mods have been discussing this issue in the BR, and I think I can safely say that jon1701 is correct:

The closing of your thread was NOT personal. It was NOT directed at you. It was done because the joke threads have gotten out of control since everyone and their brother has decided to pile on this particular bandwagon. We are okay with joke threads if they are well thought out, substantive, and cleverly done. But unfortunately, that is not the direction alot of these threads have been taking over the last couple of days.

TO ALL: The threads we are closing are largely the ones with little to no actual thought and/or content. We want to allow you guys to have your fun...but you MUST keep in mind that joke threads will be held to the same standard as any other post. A joke thread is not necessarily a spam thread...but alot of the ones being posted the last couple of days ARE spam threads. And a couple have been flat-out juvenile silliness that anyone who is old enough to have learned how to type should have outgrown years ago.

To spell it out: One or two liner non-substance posts, 'Ha! Made you look!' posts with no content, posts related to bodily functions (poop, farts or any other bodily function), and attempts at being disguising or gross are NOT gonna fly.

This IS, after all, supposed to be a serious forum - NOT a lounge.

The fact that we have allowed SOME joke threads is evidence of us trying to allow you guys to have your fun.

But it is NOT license to post anything you like. And it is NOT license to push the juvenile silliness envelope as far as you possibly can.

PLEASE - Before posting a joke thread, give it some REAL thought and effort, just like you would any other post. Because going for the cheap laughs with one-liners or juvenile silliness is not gonna cut it, and your thread WILL be closed.

In short - if it belongs in the lounge, post it in the lounge, 'fer cryin' out loud.

Thanks.

^^ I'm so glad to see this. I might actually start reading this forum regularly again. It was starting to look like the Sci-Fi Channel boards with all the crap every other thread.
