Re: No Nimoy and No Other Cameo Makes Star Trek XII Something Somethin

It's like in Heroes, it took me a while to get over George Takei in the show not being Sulu but as Hiro's dad. Then with Nichelle Nichols as the grandmother, it took a moment to separate the two. So if they were to shoe in any other ST actor, it would be hard for the audience to get over the "nostalgia omg" factor.

mm.. if the character is quite different I don't think it will be a problem, especially as the actors are so much older.

Walter Koenig was completely wonderful as Bester on Bab5 and there was not a shred of Chekov to him.

Still I would prefer to see less iconic actors.

Jonathan Archer was mentioned in the movie. I would like to see Scott Bakula in the role, in the next movie.

I voted no. We have a bunch of new young actors. They should stand alone in the limelight now. There is no need for some of the old actors.

I think its more of the iconic face. At least with a TV show you have time to get used to the actor in the role after a few episodes. Not in a movie, the cameo just kind of kills it.

I focused more on Tyler Perry than the actual argument between Kirk and Spock the first time I watched the movie

But lesser iconic stars could work.

His character would be like at least 130 years old. That's like Benjamin Button type of CGI needed... and would be weird.

I share your concern. Although not a Heroes fan (got bored after first series), I did have a 'it's Sulu!' moment. But I think in such a big (literally and narratively) canvas as Trek XII, I can't see harm in a place for some of the actors we've mentioned. They're not even iconic like Takei and Nichols, who even non-Treks might recognise. Just really good character actors who DS9/ENT fans like myself might get a kick out of seeing. And with right part, might even add something

True, I see where you're coming from :)

Bring back Porthos! Bring back Porthos! Bring back Porthos!

Considering the transporter accident, maybe they'll find him where no MAN has gone before, it's just that a beagle beat them to it.

As ENT is the only timeline to exist intact in JJverse that would be very cool. But lets face it, aging makeup looks like crap. It's just about as crap as it was in TOS and it is very distracting to look at.

The Klingon augments injection explanation would give a reason to see Archer as a younger man, at least not quite as decrepified as the timeline calls for. I think it work and not be as self indulgent another tribute TOS character somehow wedged in there, ENT not being prominent in the general publics mind.

I still voted nobody, but it's interesting to speculate how varying cameos would work.

Forget the ageing - just have Daniels following Admiral Archer around, posing as the his aide or whatever. Without a single word of explanation, fans will instantly know he's jumped to the future. That sort of thing happened all the time during the series - how many timeframes did he visit?

heh, I know I suggested that at least a year ago, Daniels just appearing in the background and no explanation ever given. That would be awesome.

After reading the novelization, I really want that little beagle in the second movie. I don't even care how they do it.

Closer to two.

Thank you Mr. Atoz!

I still want to see all those things. Especially the cube food.

Re: No Nimoy and No Other Cameo Makes Star Trek XII Something Somethin

I voted "no." If the reboot "Star Trek" is able to endure, it must stand on its own. It cannot be dependent on a specific stable of TOS characters or actors every single time they make a new movie. Spock Prime was the conduit between old and new, and he has sent the new crew off--thrusters on full. Any cameo or obvious use of a TOS actor would be cheesy and distracting to establishing the new crew and reboot universe.

It's time to explore strange new worlds, not force ourselves into revisiting the same old ones over and over and over...

I think it would be funny if Shatner played some alien bartender or something. A small role. It would be fun and I think everyone would get a kick out of it.

That would be so haaaaammmy. Shatner is the large ham, after all. This is ST, not "Parody of ST lets throw in as many sci-fi stars as we can into the movie".

... inb4 " BUT IT IS! Canon violation!"

Re: No Nimoy and No Other Cameo Makes Star Trek XII Something Somethin

I would love to see some of the "character" actors back.

Weyoun, Dukhat, Martok and may others were under such heavy makeup.

Besides it has been a few years. I am sure many of the actors look quite different now.

Re: No Nimoy and No Other Cameo Makes Star Trek XII Something Somethin

The film had Nimoy as Spock, but it also had Wil Wheaton, Greg Ellis, a W. Morgan Sheppard -- all actors who have appeared on Trek before (some multiple times). There may be others I have missed, too. I wouldn't be surprised if more familiar faces appeared in supporting roles like that. But big cameos like Shatner or Nimoy? I don't expect it.

Re: No Nimoy and No Other Cameo Makes Star Trek XII Something Somethin

I vote no. Getting stuck in it's own past is one reason Star Trek died out. Time to move on.

I agree that Archer might be a bit on the old side for something like that, but there's nothing that says Hoshi Sato couldn't be Sulu's still-living grandmother.

Considering the transporter accident, maybe they'll find him where no MAN has gone before, it's just that a beagle beat them to it.

In the epilogue of A.D. Foster's novelization, there was a short scene of the transporter mysteriously activating itself and some of the crew wondering "For the life of them, as it sped outsystem and entered warp space, no one on the Enterprise could figure out where the beagle with the very peculiar ears had come from."

So I voted "yes" with the caveat only that it be written in with some forethought and not just as some throw-away stunt-casting
