It's occurred to me with the iPhone able to do just about anything you can think of, it would follow that by the 23rd century communicators will be even more capable...able to do everything a tricorder can do and then some.
In fact, since they're redoing Star Trek and upgrading it, let's have communicators with apps, and maybe phaser-capable too!
Just think how being able to text "Bm me up Sctty!" might be useful. Or just a simple thing as GPS navigation for an away team...or shake the communicator to find the best fleshpot on Argelius...
