No Edward Norton for The Avengers

Didn't Norton refuse to do press and television interviews for The Incredible Hulk, because, even after his rewrites, he still wasn't happy with the way it turned out?

If Norton was demanding a bigger role or insisting on rewrites, then I can see why Marvel got sick of him.

While sometimes it's beneficial to have an actor who likes to branch out and put his hands into other aspects of the production, on some films you really just want actors who will shut up and do their jobs and leave the writing, directing, editing, etc. to the appropriate personnel.

I still like Norton, but it would not surprise me at all if he was seeking a disproportionate level of influence over the movie and that's why they sacked him.
IMO Marvel are still the idiots.

After seeing all the great acting work that was edited out of the Incredible Hulk, I trust Notron's judgement of what makes a good film over Marvel. Marvel not listening to the right people is what got us X3, Wolverine & Thomas Jane's Punisher. I have no doubt TIH would have been a much better recieved film with Norton's input & cut.

I agree it was a stupid decision, I'm just saying I can see Marvel's "logic," such as it is. Norton may be difficult to work with but he's one of those guys whose presence is worth the trouble. He does everything he can to turn out a good film, even against the "better judgment" of the studio.

That's just not what Marvel is looking for here.
There really isn't much logic to it IMO.
More than half the actors in Hollywood can be difficult to work with, what makes Norton so different? Norton didn't have issues with Hulk until after he saw the final cut and saw all his acting scenes cut out. Why hire someone with talent like Norton's, if your just going to cut out a majority of his dialog? If that's the case, they could have hired Ashton Kutcher.

They needed a big name actor to get butts back into the seats for The Incredible Hulk. Now since they feel they have Downey, Jackson, Johannsen, Evans, etc. for Avengers, they don't feel the need Nortons star power anymore or the need to pay an actor of his caliber. The same reason why the cut Terrance Howard fron Iron Man 2. However, Marvel is cutting their noses off despite their face because Capt. America & Thor aren't gauranteed hits. Both cound very well tank, then Marvel will need someone of Norton's caliber along w/ Downey & Jackson to still sell Avengers. So yes, Norton is worth the trouble more than Marvel nows.

I unleashed a dark passenger this morning after a particularly nasty curry I had last night.

I'm glad Norton is out. He's a little prima donna bitch anyway. He's always coming onto movies and tossing out the script and throwing little hissies if he doesn't get his way. Can anyone imagine him coming in and demanding he get to rewrite a Joss Whedon script? I can imagine Joss and Edward clawing each others eyes out over the whole affair. Better they get rid of ratface before his massive ego causes the Marvel universe to implode.

Yep.
IMO Joss needs to add a little more maturity to his scripts & Norton can bring that. I feel Joss writes many of his adults characters as if they aren't mentally over 25 years old. I find them very aloof and unidentifable. A large part of the audience that grew up reading The Avengers are now 40 -50 years old, that outside Whedon's usual targeted audience. I haven't seen anything he's done yet that grabs that crowd. However Norton's acting and his ideas for scripts IMO brings that maturity and appeal to that audience. Norton acts the way he does because he takes what he does very seriously. If more in the industry cared about the quailty of cinema as he does, we wouldn't have to redure so many bad films or remakes. We also wouldn't get Samual Jackson in Iron -Man 2 saying such dumb lines as: "The brotha' just walked in and stole your suit?" Since when does Nick Fury talk like Luke Cage? An actor like Norton would have caught that and changed it because it didn't come across correct.

Just to let you guys know: Marvel approached Ed Norton about staring in The Incredible Hulk. They approached him about rewriting the script when the director and the studio was not happy with the current draft, and Norton happily obliged. The only time Marvel and Norton clashed was over the cut of the film. Other than that, at least according to the director, the collaborative process involving Norton was very seamless and productive. Norton might have a reputation -- but let's cut the guy some slack, okay?

Just for the record, I'm over fifty and started reading the Avengers about the time the Vision first appeared, before the first Kree-Skrull War, and I love Whedon's stuff. Other people's dialogue often seems dull and stuffy by comparison.

And, honestly, most of the hardcore BUFFY and FIREFLY fans I know have kids and mortgages, so it's not like he only appeals to kids . . . not that there's anything wrong with that! :)
