Nintendo NX / Switch Discussion

^ True, I don't think any of my Nintendos have ever died but I don't think I ever used them as often as my other consoles. I bought my nephew his first game console when he was a little boy: a used gamecube. He loved that thing but apparently went through them like candy but at the time they were $20 at Gamestop and his grandpa (who lives closer than me) would go get new ones as needed. I don't know what he was doing to them or if it was because they were used but it was kind of funny. I think they bought at least 5 of them but I'm not sure on the final count.

The only time I can recall a Nintendo system of mine getting fried was a few months after I got my Nintendo 64; my parents (and I, to be honest) didn't understand the dangers of third-party controllers, particularly those made by Mad Catz -- which was a legendarily shitty company at that time -- and rather than fork out a ton of money for a second licensed controller so I could play Mario Kart 64 with a friend, my Dad bought me a Mad Catz controller. It wound up shorting out the I/O and I had to send the system in for repair.

My NES, SNES, and N64 are still rocking strong after all these years - the N64 especially strong after being the main console of choice in the floor lounge when I lived in residence at university. Although one of the controllers has never worked quite right since...

My old Gameboy wasn't as fortunate however. It started developing a problem where it wouldn't display entire vertical lines, so I ended up replacing it with a GBA. And the Wii had to be sent in for warranty repair/replacement after it had some graphics chip issue from overheating or something like that.

I still have the Nintendo I got back in 1991-2 for Christmas. last I knew it still worked, just need to show it some loving. Yes I know blowing into it is bad... but it works!

It really doesn't, that's part of why it's bad. :p

When that gives the appearance of fixing it, what's really happening is the cartridge contacts had previously been misaligned with the contacts in the port, and removing and reinserting the cartridge eventually put them back into proper alignment. You can get all the same benefit by just removing and reinserting the cartridge without blowing, it just seems like blowing is a key part because of confirmation bias.

I'm not sure that even years of sitting open could cause enough dust build-up to actually interfere with a connection between cartridge and port contacts anyway, you'd need a ton of dust for that. As in enough dust that the port would probably be packed too solidly with dust for blowing to dislodge it anyway; enough dust that you wouldn't actually be able to even physically plug the cartridge into the port in the first place.

That's not really true, the blowing into it is bad because the moisture of your breathe rusts out the metal of the cart. However that thin layer of moisture actually might help it work. It's bad because we are just rusting out our games.

While you're right that I can't actually say that it has no chance of working - that was an overstatement on my part - I can say that there are so many ways the NES port can wear out and the cartridge can get misaligned or not make contact properly that removing and reinserting without blowing has plenty of chance to help on its own, and the damage you can cause by blowing (especially to a 25-year-old machine or cartridge) isn't worth the chance that it might work.

Seriously, try just removing and reinserting a few times without any blowing next time around, see how it goes. :p

Oh yeah I'm no longer going to blow into it. I'm not even sure where my NES games went. I left the systems at my mom's house and somehow the games were one place, the consoles the other and the power cords somewhere weird. Had the games and the consoles but no power, now I have power cords and console but no games.

It's looking more and more likely that Breath of the Wild is going to be a launch title. I'm hoping they have a Zelda bundle, I'd splurge for that.

How is it looking more and more like a launch title? It will launch in like 10 weeks, but they only started to test the game out a month or so ago.

It's all speculation, but ads have been spotted showing Breath of Wild with a March release date. And now a lot of the "insiders" are saying it will be a launch title too.

By all means take this with a grain of salt, but we'll know either way next week.

Meh, I honestly couldn't care less what comes at launch. I'll either buy Mario in March and Zelda a few months later or Zelda in March and Mario a few months later. Both games are going to be awesome, so either way is fine with me.

I'm hoping it's going back to the open world style of Mario 64 and Sunshine. Mario is long overdo for a return to non-linearity.

Unless it has like $500 on it it's very hard to buy the new Zelda on the Wii and expecting it to work. ;)

I'm tempted to take Friday off from work. Stay up late on Thursday to watch the stream and spend the day on my couch watching all the cool games.
