Nintendo 3DS

I checked out a Nintendo 3DS at Best Buy tonight it boasts that it offers 3D without the need for glasses. And, you know what, it pulls off the effect very well. It's obvious a look that all in depth (rather than poking out at you 3D) and for the player it'll look very good.

So long as you're the type of player who keeps the game-system right in front of your face at a flat angle and don't look at it from the side at all.

I've had my 3DS for over a week now and am very impressed with the new capabilities over the DS models, the 3D effect is pretty cool and the console itself is comfortable enough to hold to get the effect. My only gripe with it is the awkward thumb pad/direction pad placement now, something closer and more diagonal would have been better.

I tried out Street Fighter 3d not to long ago and I was shocked with how well it looked. Right now there aren't any games out for it that I want but the potential is definitely there.

Yeah, there's no "must-have" app for me yet, and I checked it out at Best Buy and wasn't very impressed. This may be a system I wait for to drop in price and buy only if they have any good games ever hit.

That's really the main problem with the 3DS. The 3D effect might be amazing, but maybe I'm a little strange -- I tend to buy systems for the games and not the specs. And for $250 there has to be more than a couple of good games.

The 3D effect was pretty good but do people routinely sit there in a very fixed position playng with their game system in order to get this benefit? That's what stuck me is that how limited the effect seemed to be.

But it does show a lot in potential and in what could happen in the future as the technology/process improves.

It won't drop in price. For the last six years or so, games and systems don't drop in price anymore. Remember when a game would go down to 19.99 after six months? Smash Brothers for the Wii has yet to go down in price.

^depends on the game, a top name game like smash brothers still sells well, but lesser known titles drop in price fairly quickly, especially DS games, I was in gamestop the other day and new copies of DS games were marked down to $19.99 or $14.99

I also seem to remember the 360 costing $400 and the PS3 costing $600 on their releases... They've both come down as has the Wii from its initial $250.

Yeah, I keep seeing Mass Effect 2 for 360 for like 20 bucks brand new at multiple stores, and I saw new copies Arkham Asylum for even less at futureshop. Both topslelf games less then 2 years old selling for a 3rd of their original price. The problem is Nintendo. they hardly ever lower the price of their own games. Mario Galaxy 1 is still selling for 50 plus. and that game out how long ago! Same goes for pretty much every other Nintendo game. Even the Wii has hardly dropped. I chalk it up to greed. Uncharted 2 is better then anything put out by Nintendo in the last 10 years. It's sold well, and still Sony atleast had the decency to drop the price by half after awhile. Same with Microsoft and their own IP's. Damn Nintendo!

Well, this is probably going to raise a few hackles, but Nintendo hasn't made a good game for the over 14 gamer in like 10 years anyway, so really, who cares? They do make popular games, though, and I think that's just what it is - they still have strong demand for those games at higher prices, so they continue to sell them at those prices.

Yeah, I think I'm going to pretend I didn't see that comment.

I'm sure the 3DS will come down in price eventually. Maybe it'll take the PSP2 to force Nintendo's hand, but I'd be shocked if it's still $250 by the end of next year.

Indeed. The reason why Nintendo will drop prices when there is a need to. They DO have an obligation to their shareholders to make as much money as possible. Why drop the price if people are willing to buy it?

People could say the same about oil companies and the price of gas, but we still all bitch about greedy oil companies, myself included. Plus I really do have to agree with Bishop in that Nintendo has all but given up making games games aimed at anyone past puberty. I have a Wii, and while I get a certain enjoyment from the likes of the various Mario/Zelda/Donkey Kong/Wii (name activity here) games, they are still very very very kid friendly. I'm 26 years old and i'd like to play something aimed at me, not someone 15 years younger. I get that the games for younger players fly off the shelf, but could Nintendo atleast attempt a few more mature titles. I do give them some props for trying Goldeneye again and even a dead space title, but fact is they really wernt that good, nor were they actually made Nintendo. Say what you will about PS3 and 360, but they atleast found a balance in that they make games for young and old. At this, Nintendo FAILS.

Wow...

If you don't understand the difference between what the oil companies do and what Nintendo does you need to stop playing video games and start reading books and the news.

Its inevitable that there will be newer models of 3DS by the end of next year. DSL came out about 18 months after DS. DSi about 18 months after DSL. DSi XL about 12 months after DSi.

By next Christmas, there will be a newer, better, cheaper, 3DS. And you know what? I can wait. I need a handheld that I don't have to recharge every 4 hours of game time.

I am fully aware that there is a massive difference between the two. But in general terms, it's the same concept, make as much money as possible. With both organizations making a metric shit ton of it and rarely giving any kind of discount to the public at large.

exactly. i havent followed the 3ds much, but if it follows typical nintendo hand held patterns then there is probably some super obvious issues (GBA/DS). one or two issues will be fixed (barely) in the next version due out in a year or so (GBA SP/DS Lite). then you can probably expect to get some weird variant that no one was really asking for (GBA Micro/DSi/DSI XL).

Really? I have all the settings on my 3DS up full and it lasts at least 5 hours of 3DS play and up to 8 of DS play with me taxing the battery fully.
