Night Terrors: That was great

Better to have one and not need it than need one and not have it.

In general I cannot disagree with that. Of course you can have a long discussion about 'needing it', and gun attitudes in the US vs some other counties, but that's a rabbit hole I'd rather not dive into :)

It's one of the episodes I always skip. But this time I ended up watching it and it was fantastic. This is a great example of storytelling. I don't know why I never watched it in full before?
One of the episodes everyone including the cast and crew hated at the time. It's a solid episode though.

I see this episode very much the same way as Conundrum. There's certainly flaws, but what you get with a chance to see the entire cast playing the same effect is worth the sacrifice. The sleep deprivation performances here are fantastic

There's plenty of episodes where something is going terribly wrong & it could kill them, but it's rare that their own mental acuity is that thing. There might be nothing more chilling than them just losing it & doing themselves/each other in, which is what it plays like the whole time

I feel like we got a taste of that "crew losing it" vibe in Sarek, but they really go all in on it here & it's wildly engaging entertainment imho.

That scene where Picard tells Data they may have to count on him for their very lives is really gripping because Data doesn't emote & the feeling that Picard loses faith is palpable. The idea that Data isn't registering his desperation just sucks the wind out of his sails & you can see it plainly in the brilliant performance.

The performances were fantastic, all around. What particularly put things in perspective was Picard losing it in the turbolift. When Picard completely loses his faculties, and the crew sees that... you know it's deadly serious.

I have always loved "Night Terrors"... another example of how TNG did horror better than anyone else in the franchise

Indeed
I plan on watching this one more time tonight
