Nickelodeon sets Avatar: Last Airbender sequel for 2011

I've only seen it once, so I don't remember all the details.

I could see it being the end of Bending forever. Perhaps all Benders get their powers from the Avatar spirit. If the Avatar is gone, Benders may cease to exist.

That's unlikely, the Waterbenders get their powers from the moon spirit and lost them when it was killed and the lion turtle said people were bending energy in the time before the Avatar.

I don't know. It seems the inevitable fate of a fantasy world for the magic to leave and the mundane to take over. Not that the Avatar franchise would necessarily be around long enough to eventually tell that story, but it does seem like something that would be explored at some point.

Only if the conceit is that the fantasy world represents Earth's past, so that the magic must eventually go away or go into hiding to produce the world we know. That certainly isn't the case here; the Bender world is clearly not Earth. (Although Roger Ebert somehow got the impression it was a far-future Earth.)

Plus if air-benders are nomads, then they could realisticaly come from any nation, and just be born different.

Looks like the The Legend of Korra will be a miniseries. Of course if the show does really well in the ratings, I can see Nickelodeon ordering more episodes.

AvatarSpirit.net board member MoonlitShadow attended the Avatar signing with Bryan Konietzko & Mike DiMartino at the San Diego Comic-Con today, and returned with the following bit of Korra news…

So, Im currently using my iPod to type a short message, but I just got out of the avatar signing at the Nick booth. One pretty big piece of info- Korra IS a miniseries, and Bryke is happy because tha means they can really make an impressive 12 episodes instead of hits and misses like they felt they had with original series. Also, expect Korra to air in LATE fall 2011.

I’m sure some will be disappointed that it will not be a full season, but this could work out for the best. At least we can be sure that Korra won’t be making any trips to the Great Divide.

I just finished the series. It's amazing how much tv you can watch when procrastinating before a grad final. Good stuff. I didn't see anything regarding the child of Aang and Sotarra, so I assume that was in a book rather than shown on screen.

I'm looking forward to the sequel mini-series.

I don't see it. The executives behind Nick's Animated programs have never been 100% behind the show and have done their best to screw with it.

I agree that the show wasn't treated very well during it's last season. While checking schedule for season three, I noticed that they aired the entire second half of season 3 over one week. To me that looked like a network that despeately wanted the show to be over with as quickly possible.

This confuses me. Avatar is the only thing worth watching on the network. The rest is crap like SpongeBob.

I have thought that instead of movies book adaptions ( say The Wheel of Time)ought to be made like Avatar was,a superior cartoon would be cheaper to make and if the folks behind the series Avatar made it, would be great.

Didn't they just do an interview saying the point of this show was so NickWhatever could get more episodes of the universe without making Avatar go 156 episodes? They said it was gonig to be more open and yadda yadda and there are only 12 episodes? Stupid.

Also Spongebob is watched by more people than who watch NBC, so I wouldn't make fun of it too much.

Spongebob is very cheap to make and gets huge ratings. I guess that's all that matters for the network.

I heard about that. Was there any reason the episodes were delayed for so long? Did the writer's strike have anything to do it or was it just bad planning? I noticed the first two seasons weren't streched out so much.

I'm watching the series on DVD, so I'm really glad that I don't have to deal with such long breaks between episodes.

I think Avatar was doing decently in the ratings. The series finale got something around 5.5 million viewers. I'm just glad the writers were able to finish telling their story instead of getting cut off because of ratings. Ratings have doomed many good shows before they could finish.
