What's funny is that people are saying it's a project Meyer has worked on before, but Meyer has never produced a TV show before nor has done anything except for mini-series, aside from a few one-off episodes, so ST: Discovery is a first for him.
We already know there is a comic, a novel series and an aftershow. so most likely these are not the secret project he's talking about.

This is reminding me a lot of Kasdan's return to Star Wars. A lot of similarities in the contributions these two have made to their respective franchises.
Maybe he just meant the show....
I don't really see the Kelvinverse movies bringing him in as a writer or director, and I just find it a bit hard to believe that we'd be getting a third Star Trek project before Discover even starts. If Trek was at a Star Wars or Marvel level I could see that, but the last series barely made it to four seasons, and the Kelvin movies haven't been that popular.
The only way I could see him doing a movie is if they go back to the Prime Universe 23 Century, but that seems unlikely to me.
Even if it's not the Discovery comic, either a different comic or a novel seems the most likely to me.
Son of Khan. Or Seti Alpha 5 series. Season 1 shoots in the tropics. Season 2 in the desert.

But Trek is only going to be on All Access for 15 weeks of the year, so that's 37 weeks without any new Trek for what they hope will be a Trek-heavy CBSAA subscriber base. How do you fix that? You make more new Trek to fill the gaps.
Netflix pretty much bankrolled Discovery, and I wouldn't be surprised if they've asked for another show too.

Would it really be smart for them to start work on a SECOND concurrent show before the first is released, particularly when audience reception is such a big question mark?
One possibility (a long shot) is that they're starting preliminary work on a second show that will act as a second season for Discovery. Ie: each season will be a self-contained story/cast ala Fargo or True Detective, but in this case, the second season could actually have a different title, in effect making it a different show.

. From what I've seen so far, Discovery is definitely not the Trek I want to see. I want a Prime timeline series that's not contradictory to the real Trek timeline. I don't think that's too much to ask.
To be fair (I feel like I'm saying this a lot these days), I don't think it's necessarily right to say we know much of anything about whether or not Discovery contradicts anything in Prime.
But of course, you are more than welcome to your opinions.
What's real is up to the people who make the shows/films.
Well, potentially it might be. Trek is known to be a successful concept, but not - arguably - in all versions. So developing a second approach alongside would provide plan b if Discovery flopped.
I'm not sure I'm even convincing myself here, but it's not an utterly insane idea. Eggs, baskets, etc.
A second series is not realistic before they see how DSC is received especially considering the movie franchise has cooled down yet again.
I also don't think Meyer would be working on novels or comics at this point in his career.

Meyer hasn't directed anything in 20 years and anything of substance in almost 30 years. The industry is completely different now. It's unrealistic to think Paramount or CBS would ever risk putting him in charge of a major film project. Besides, outside of Trek, his directing career is rather unremarkable. And his film/TV writing ability is a mix bag. He is an exceptional novelist and that is clearly where he's most talented. But that doesn't always translate well to screenwriting, especially when it comes to script structure which is definitely his glaring weakness (See: TUC). Heck, almost all of Khan's biggest problems are structural.
