Nick Meyers new interview. Working on a secret trek project

When a ticket, popcorn, M&Ms, and soda goes for $30+, a cinematic reach-around isn't much to ask for.

To each his own. I guess I'm just tired of the Borg. And I'm not sure what Lin, Meyer, Pegg and Jung could add to the story to make them interesting again.

But if it actually happened, who knows?

As much as I would love it to be another series (especially one set after Nemesis), I highly doubt it. I think the safe bet is something involving The Undiscovered Country or a book.

Well, your first mistake is getting popcorn, M&M's, and soda at the cinema. :p

Yeah, whatever. Of course Abrams will be signing him up tomorrow. That's why Meyer is on record as more or less saying he doesn't think his reboot movies are even Star Trek.

I never said he was going to hire him. I simply said that of all the people who have directed Trek movies in the past, Meyer is the only one I could see J.J. hiring. And Roddenberry didn't think Meyer's movies were Star Trek. Whenever a new team takes over and brings a new interpretation it can be hard for the old team to adjust.

You'll find it funny how many people will find positives in something they dislike where a big paycheck is involved.

True.

The more I think about this...if I said before that I think it's unlikely that Meyer is working on the next Trek film, I believe I'll take that back. There's a reasonable likelihood, IMO, that this is exactly what he's doing - most probably participating in writing it.

Just because (if) Meyer is working on a Trek feature, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is in concert with Bad Robot. It could be CBS and Paramount are teaming up on a separate film project.

True, but it's most likely that he's working with Bad Robot since Bad Robot has produced the last three and so far there's no indication that they're not doing the next one.

This is about the point in that process where, if there's real concern among the producers about the story, they might be pulling in a variety of writers to do a draft or take a stab at one aspect of it or another. Given Abrams's and Meyer's relationship and Meyer's history with the franchise, they might well give his agent a call and ask him in. There is also some "hearing the fans"-type PR value to getting his name associated with the project.

After pressing him, Meyer assured he could “absolutely!” reveal on the record he was working on this non-Discovery Star Trek project, and that it was something he was working on currently.

The only other known major Star Trek project that comes to mind would be a feature film. But Meyer wasn’t budging when asked to confirm this assumption…

TrekMovie: Are we talking more feature film because as far as I know, there is only one television project, I assume.

Meyer: You can assume.

This tells me it's television.

That sounds to me more like Meyer trying to give people that impression. I just don't see CBS greenlighting a second show before the first one has aired. The main reason they're making Discovery is to promote All Access. A second Star Trek show would largely attract the same audience they're already hoping will subscribe. That's why they're making things like The Good Fight to attract a different audience to All Access.

Which is why I think it's animation. Paramount knows if it wants to improve Trek's "niche" it needs to bring in younger viewers.

Of all the possibilities suggested, animation is probably my favorite idea. You're right about the need for younger fans. Otherwise you end up with the entire fandom going, "When I was your age the Klingons didn't have these new fangled ridges. We just painted a guy to look like a Mexican."

Could it be animation? Sure. Doesn't make much sense to have a 70+ year old man working on it. One who has never (to my knowledge) worked in any kid related entertainment fields.

Well as has been noted elsewhere, whatever project he's working on, he's most likely acting primarily as a consultant instead of as a writer. If it is animation, he could help bring a level of sophistication and depth which would be very welcome.
