Nicholas Meyer to join writing staff of new series

Yeah, someone revoke Clint Eastwood's DGA card, for instance. Too risky.
I like Clint Eastwood, but I bet his completion insurance has gone up.

Similarly, I hope Ridley Scott's plans for the Alien films get completed - by him. I don't want him out because he's old. I want him in as long as possible. But I still know the risk.

If I look that good when I'm 70, I'll be ecstatic. Of course, I'll be pretty ecstatic if I'm even alive at 70.
Kinda makes the point about age. We all know the truth.

Not really. I think the studios love having Scott or Eastwood on the payroll. They don't care what you think you know.

By your logic, loving to have them on the payroll makes them immortal. I know they're not immortal. That's fine if they don't care. I love to see their movies. Doesn't change the greater risk of death at their ages. If that is offensive, take it up with nature.

My logic is, there will be more to hiring them than their age. There are probably younger directors who are a greater risks for various reasons. If they are healthy enough, why not?

That's all true. And there are younger directors (and writers) who can't hold a candle to older talent. So sure, why not. The old guys are still gonna die sooner by all expectations than later, and the chances of going for seven years, assuming it works out, are less than the younger hacks. I wouldn't expect Meyer to stay the entire series even if still living.

The strongest voices not that long ago said:

1) Trek suffered too much franchise fatigue. Easier to just surf off the old properties.
2) Sci-fi is too expensive to risk a show. Better to stick to sitcoms and reality TV.
3) CBS would at least wait for the movie franchise to be over.
4) They'd never bring anyone back with prime-trek ties.

The last mystery will be what continuity they'll use.

Cynicism about by-the-numbers Hollywood decisions might be the norm but it's exceptions like this that make following showbiz interesting.

How cool would it be to get Jonathan Frakes to direct an episode or two?

He was pushing hard for Star Trek Beyond.

I see I'm not the only observant person around here.

Actually, I would rather new directors get a chance to helm episodes, anything to get away from the constant nepotism Berman did so much of. I get it, it's a geek thing to see the credits of Frakes, Burton, Dawson, McNeil, Carson, and whoever in the Berman well, but I'd rather someone who hasn't done TV streaming before or new talent.

He says that VI is the "jumping off" point for the series or something very close...let me find the article again so I can link it.

EDIT: Here it is...

I think they're getting at the tone of the movie, combined with the 'ripped from political headlines' themes.

Putting the new series between two existing eras would be a serious misstep in my opinion. I don't like prequels at the best of times, and setting the show as both prequel and sequel doesn't sound anything like 'new Trek' to me.

To my mind the only way to throw off the shackles of what has gone before is a leap into the future again, like TNG did. A new era.

I've got no issue with 'ripped from the headlines' stories but one thing I'd love them to avoid is War on Terror analogies. Done to death, guys. There are other contemporary issues to comment on.

I still think people are treating the VI jumping off point comment way too literally. I think Meyer is only thinking thematically. While they could set it in the movie timeline, I don't think this is likely.

It'd only be for one or two episodes out of many. It's not like he's taking the spot of a Stanley Kubrick or Quentin Tarantino.

He's a great director and very passionate about Star Trek. I'd rather have him for a random episode than "no-name director #34".

Frakes is a great director in your opinion, but I'd rather director #34 who can get a chance to deliver a story than for while watching be distracted because of Fan-luv names. I rather focus on the episode than geek out on that stuff.
