TOS did quite a few episodes with space nazis/space historic earth cultures - and most of them I wouldn't put above 'Storm front' in quality.
Of course, these TOS nazi episodes were not bashed by the fans, simply because they were part of TOS and not fanon-contradicting Enterprise.

But you do have a point - there was no initial plan for the temporal cold war arc. And it showed - when one wants to do something coherent involving time-travel, one needs to plan in advance.

Nevertheless, the ideea for the temporal cold war was a very intelligent one - for the reasons I mentioned in my above post. It was one of the most interesting science-fiction ideeas presented in star trek.

I liked the time travelling space nazis, it reminded me of the silliness of TOS.

I remember reading an article by one Tom DeFalco, who was at that time Editor-In-Chief of Marvel Comics. The article was about those who wanted to break into writing, and he said that so many would-be writers came to him and said "I have lots of ideas!" And he replied with something that is so simple.

"Good ideas do not a story make."

Simply having a good story concept doesn't mean the job's done.

Wrong. Berman and Braga had both stated that they were toying with several possibilities for the identity of FG.

But surely if you have a villain there, you should know who they are instead of toying with ideas...

Or you keep your options open, in case a writer comes up with a better idea. It makes the story more organic and less Babylon 5.

I really think Enterprise would have benefited from being a lot more Babylon 5.

The temporal cold war arc was partly inconsistent; it could have been much more, it was an opportunity largely missed.

That does not mean that what we got was 'bad'; far from it:
Broken Bow, Cold Front, Past Tense, the temporal cold war sequences in S3 we actually pretty good.
And the rest of the episodes dealing with the temporal cold war were, at worst, mediocre. They were not even close to sinking to 'awful'.

I found Carpenter Street to be pretty dire.

It was leagues above 'And the children shall lead' or 'Up the long ladder'.

Whether one finds it mediocre or good is a matter of taste. Anything below 'mediocre' is not justified.

I think ENT benefited from not sucking as much as Babylon 5 did.
