NHL 2011/2012 Season

The Leafs had a horrible game last night, no energy, no drive. They will not win anything playing like that.

And what a mess in Columbus. For the second straight game, they got manhandled. The coach and GM have to go out there.

5-1 loss to Florida. Outscored 12-1 in two games. Brutal. The Leafs should have kept Giguere instead of thinking Gustavvson would ever be a decent backup.

I don't watch the Leafs all that often, but this seems like a remarkable downturn. I don't think anyone thought the Leafs could keep up the pace, but why the complete collapse?

Don't get me wrong, I want the Leafs to fail (:p) as much as anyone, but lets keep some perspective here. This is their FIRST back to back loss all season.

Yes but... Outscored 12-1 in two games. Gustavsson has never lived up to the hype. This is his third year in the league. In 74 games he has only 26 win with a SVS% below .900 and GAA. over 3.00. That's the perspective I'm looking at and even before the back to back losses the teams goaltending stats were horrid. They're now third worst in the league.

So, I guess we can promote Scrivens back to early godhood again, now? ;)

Seriously, that was a nice steal of two points tonight, and Scrivens's save on Steen was insane.

Just a shame he couldn't steal anything when they played Ottawa last night. But I think it's pretty clear, with Scrivens getting the start again, that they've given up on "The Monster".

Lucic's hit on Sabres goalie Ryan Miller was interesting. I think goalies who play outside their crease should be vulnerable (it's got to be a real risk when you choose to do so).

But that doesn't change the unfortunate fact that most other teams would see a player penalized for doing so, if CBC's commentators weren't mostly Bruins fans Lucic would be criticized far more than he was, and Lucic himself tacitly admitted it was legal but not kosher when he says the Bruins would never let that happen to Thomas.

Yeah, I wish they'd just let goalies be fair game outside of their crease. If they want to skate halfway to the blue line to play the puck then they should be treated like any other player on the ice.

Seen smiling after the hit. Yeah, what Lucic did was pure thuggery. I am now really hoping that someone out there nails Lucuc's ass but good. He even looks like a Mafia goon.

But then I've always hated the Bruins anyway and Lucic just game me more cause.

Yeah, I wish they'd just let goalies be fair game outside of their crease. If they want to skate halfway to the blue line to play the puck then they should be treated like any other player on the ice.

That was the original reason for that little trapezoid behind the net. They basically wanted to reduce goalies going behind the net, securing the puck, and being essentially immune to contact. The problem is they didn't address the problem of the goalie ahead of the line doing the same thing.

I wouldn't go as far as to say fair game, but I certainly think all incidental contact should be fine. Essentially, aside from an intentional body check, contact with a goalie to get the puck from him is perfectly reasonable.

^As much as I like seeing the Caps humiliated, I'd rather not have George McPhee wake up. The later he realizes that Green's return and Boudreau's desperation tactics (benching superstars, bag skates, etc..) won't magically fix everything, the better for all of us.

Meanwhile, the Penguins have made a quiet little roster move that will no doubt go unnoticed by the national media.
The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Sunday that Sidney Crosby will finally return to the lineup Monday when the Penguins host the Islanders at the CONSOL Energy Center.

Yes, against the Islanders of all teams. No recent history of deliberately injuring Penguins players from them, no siree.

Though to be fair, both teams have seriously cleaned up their acts this season. Neither team even bothered to dress enforcers in their first two meetings this season, much to the disappointment of the media hype machine.

And the entire Hockey community breathes a sigh of relief as the poster boy of the league is coming back.

I don't mean that in any disrespect either, it's just day in and day out we get injury updates which end up being nothing and it was like the entire hockey world was holding it's breath for this guy to come back. Now that he has, maybe we can finally move on and I am actually looking forward to his first game back now. I wonder how he's going to look, not having played in a game since January.

I hope he does well, I remember back when he was a little and playing games against friends of mine in the local rink. Seeing him make the NHL, win the cup, win the gold in Vancouver has been something.

It's just another day in the universe for me with Crosby back. He has always been the most whiny, woe is me kind of player I ever watched that held the moniker of "superstar." My kind of players, the Yzerman's, the Gilmour's, the Sakic's, would run through a wall, get up and dust themselves off, not be running looking for the ref for the penalty call.

Think of him what you will, he had a pretty good game last night. That first goal was amazing.
