NHL 2010/2011 season....

^ I liked the draft, I really enjoyed the Superskills competition, and I also had fun watching the game.
The draft was fun and interesting I thought, I missed the superskills but the game wasn't so bad. I mean it's not hockey and you can't expect it to be hockey, so if you go in with that mindset I'm not seeing what the big deal is.

Kudos to Carolina for putting on a hell of a show. It's great to see US cities doing that.

Now, time for the stretch run. Playoff deadline is in 27 days.

I'm glad the season finally starts back up tonight. Now all the extra stuff is over, time to get back to the business at hand and the stretch run to the Postseason. I do hope the Sharks pull off something before the Deadline (Like getting a D-man) but I really hope they don't have a slump like they did coming out of Christmas Break.

Ladies and gentleman: The Pittsburgh Penguins' offense sans Crosby, Malkin, Letestu, and Comrie.

Kunitz-Jeffrey-Dupuis
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Conner-Talbot-Asham
Rupp-Adams-Godard

To put that in perspective, that's a whopping four guys with more than 5 goals, and one guy with more than 10.

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

:sigh:

The All Star weekend hasn't been interesting since they took away the rapid fire competition. Man, I miss those days.

Really, though, I wasn't a fan of that dumb draft. Not only were the teams completely ridiculous, but it made Kessel look dumb sitting there all by himself. No one deserves that. If I was an all star and there was a chance I could go last, I'd do everything in my power not to be there.

What they should have done is do it like shinny: everyone put their sticks into a pile and pick some kid out of the crowd to throw sticks to each side of the ice, then players put on their team jersey, and that's it. And do the game on the first day, and the skills on the second day. Also, stop putting players in skills competitions they aren't good at. There's no reason Backes and Nash should be in the hardest shot competition. And there's no reason for goalies to be in the fastest skater, especially when Thomas is a terrible skater.

Players who are fit for the particular skills should be brought in for the day trip. I don't want to see the best skater out of the 40 all stars; I want to see the top 10 skaters in the league. Complete overlap is unnecessary and dumbs down the events.

BTW, I figure you guys will enjoy this.. my new Voyager themed goalie mask:

Yeah, I felt bad for him too, especially because I don't think he was the worst player at the All-Star Game. I mean, Erik Karlson went well before Kessel, and he's a defenseman with a -17 rating. Kessel's a -19, but he's a sniper with no support whatsoever on his line, and he's still managing to stay in the top-25 goal scorers in the NHL. And yes, I am biased, but it's still pretty silly.

Whatever, though. I don't give a damn about the ASG, since, no matter what they do, it's going to be really boring hockey.

Feeling bad for Kessel is silly. First of all, he's making $4.5 mil this year, and $6 mil the next couple of years. Secondly, he's still an All Star, and made that event because he's a damn good hockey player - there's plenty of people in the NHL that aren't as great as he is. Having Daniel Sedin or Anze Kopitar picked ahead of you isn't what I'd call embarrassing.

And the reason the Ottawa defensemen went before him if I'm not mistaken is that the captains had to pick a certain amount of defensemen before a certain round in the draft.

Just because he makes great money and is a "star" hockey player doesn't mean the guy doesn't have feelings. It was rather evident he was embarrassed, and absolutely no one invited to an event designed to showcase the best hockey players in the world should be made to be embarrassed.

DiPietro fights like he tends goal. Brent Johnson just dropped him in one punch!

Didn't take long for it to reach Youtube.

I'm shocked and amazed that Boston and Dallas managed to find the time to play a hockey game with all the time they spent skating around being fucking morons.

The occasional fight is tolerable but this extreme goon shit just drives me crazy.

I've never seen a goalie fight before but that was awesome. The look on MAF's face was priceless as well. What was DePietro thinking. :guffaw:

Sadly, they don't seem to happen much any more. Here's a classic:

I'll always remember that classic, Potvin vs Hextall. Those days in the early/mid-90s were good days to be a Leafs fan. I really miss Wendel and Dougie.

As for the All Star game I never watch it.

As for feeling sorry for Kessel, I sure don't. I feel sorry for the Leafs fans for some of Burke's bonehead moves. I'd say he's 50/50 and thus, evened out with the good and bad moves. He dumped some dead-weight contacts no-one thought he could move (Blake, Toskala) but then made a bad, bad trade for Kessel and grossly over-paid for Komisarek. I could go on but why bother.

And how about Reimer's first NHL shutout? They sent Gustavsson to the AHL today (I never thought he was the Leaf's future) and Reimer is up with the big club. Hell, if they'd been playing Reimer and Giggy all season, the Leafs might have been fighting for the final playoff spot right now. I guess the best we can hope for is that Reimer can keep playing the way he has and the Leafs won't be handing Boston another Top 5 pick at the draft.

Oh, and DiPietro is out for 4-6 weeks after that punch that broke his face. Brilliant 15 year contact. The guy is made of glass and he's missed more games than he's played since signing it. And if not, it's damned close.

^ I caught a glimpse of a screen on TSN this evening saying that DiPietro has been paid approximately $325,000 per start over the course of his contract so far.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this point. Pittsburgh no longer has any healthy forwards with more than 10 goals. Our mighty line-up yesterday:

Chris Conner - Jordan Staal - Matt Cooke
Pascal Dupuis - Dustin Jeffery - Tyler Kennedy
Mike Rupp - Max Talbot - Tim Wallace
Eric Tangradi - Craig Adams - Eric Godard

In other words:
Rookie 3rd Liner - 3rd Liner - 3rd Liner
3rd Liner - AHLer - 3rd Liner
Goon - 4th Liner - AHL Goon
AHLer - 4th Liner - Goon

^Matt Cooke could also probably be labeled 'Goon'

Even though the Penguins definitely count in my top two most disliked teams, I almost feel bad for them. Hey, you cleared $8.5 million in cap space - you'll get a forward with more than ten goals.

Also hope Crosby doesn't go the way of Eric Lindros, Keith Primeau, Ian Laperriere...I could probably add Savard to the list now.

^ Yeah... I'm not a huge fan of Crosby or the Penguins, but he is a damn good player, and it'd be a shame if that happened to him. It sounds like he's got a pretty bad concussion, though, and often when you get one like that, you're a lot more susceptible to more happening. Just have to wait and see.

In other news, we have the first deal of trade deadline season, as the Leafs have shipped Beauchemin back to Anaheim for Lupol, Gardiner, and a conditional 4th round pick. Gardiner is the real acquisition here, I think, as Lupol seems to be a salary dump for the Ducks. However, he did put up good numbers a couple seasons ago, so there's always a chance he can return to that form in a new environment.

Gardiner seems like he'll be a solid addition to the blueline in a couple years, though, if he matures to his potential. Long term, he'll probably be a better fit for the team than Beauchemin ever was.

I'm happy with this trade.

In the short term, the Leafs had too many defensemen and no scoring up front. Problem possibly fixed.

In the long term, Gardner will be a great pick-up.
