NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

Well, my Beloved Rams did a little better....

:(

The defense was okay.

I was right though, the Rams did in fact have chances to steal this one. If only Ryan had held on to the ball...

Oh well. Arizona deserved to win, but they will not beat many other teams playing like that.

And I never, I mean never, want to see Bradford throw 55 passes in a game again. That's terrible.

Then again it probably won't matter much, with 1.5 healthy receivers on the roster....

:scream:

I thought Bradford did well. Man, WTF happened to the Cowboys? That was pitiful execution...except for the wrestling takedown #71 did on the Redskins defender at the end. At least Dez looked competent.

Nice wrestling move on that Dallas player's part. Too bad he's playing FOOTBALL and not wresting Jon Cena!

Well, I could have predicted both the question and answer by half time. It's a dance both reporters and Reid will continue until Kolb either plays better or doesn't.

Was it just Kolb playing badly or wasn't it more that Vick objectively had an excellent game? He very nearly won the game for the Eagles.

Prior to getting knocked out, Kolb wasn't playing well at all whether you look at it statistically or in terms of contributions that don't show up in the stats. Sure you can blame first game jitters, but I'm still wondering why the Eagles pinned all their hopes on a guy with so little playing time and a 68.9 lifetime QB rating going into the game. We all know success in college doesn't translate to success in the pros, especially for QBs.

McNabb played like he's capable of, which must've been a big relief. I'm sure Eagles fans are looking forward to a brand new QB controversy to sink their teeth into.

Vick was playing against a defense that A) clearly hadn't gameplanned for him to be playing more than a few series, and B) was already starting to play a bit soft, based on how the offense was curb-stomping the Eagles' defense. He didn't have a stellar game, but he did play far better than Kolb did.

I like this guy's take on the McNabb issue:

It's mid-July, and Angelo Cataldi sounds like a baby without his binky. Talk radio discussion in Philly is always slow in summer, even when the Phillies are very good, but Cataldi sounds lost without his favorite plaything. In the absence of anything substantial to say about Philadelphia or national sports, all discussions on his highly rated morning show seem to travel back to McNabb.

When the subject of basketball Hall of Fame speeches comes up, the morning team muses about whether Michael Jordan will launch into another self-serving rant before introducing Scottie Pippen. They joke that McNabb would give a similar airing-of-grievances speech, given the unlikely opportunity. "Boy, that's our only chance of getting mentioned in a Hall of Fame speech," Cataldi muses, inflating his importance as McNabb's primary antagonist. A few days later, a caller just back from Washington reports that he saw McNabb's image painted on a city bus. "Was it the same bus he threw his teammates under?" Cataldi asks, referring to an incident which never occurred.

As summer wore on and Eagles camp started, Cataldi became even more intense in his disparagement of McNabb. As for Kevin Kolb, Cataldi said often that he had "such a great feeling" about the new quarterback, in contrast to the old. In fairness, Cataldi wasn't alone in his McNabb bashing and Kolb fluffing. On rival sports station 97.5 FM "The Fanatic" (an ESPN affiliate) one weekend personality compared Kolb to Joe Montana while callers expressed their joy about a season without "McChoke." It was more than a talk-radio phenomenon. Writers from suburban papers asked loaded questions at training camp, baiting players to make them say something negative about their former quarterback. An unconventional wisdom arose that Kolb would do things McNabb never did -- hit receivers in stride so they can make plays, open up the pages of the West Coast offense that were closed for the last decade. Meanwhile, Kolb was still waiting to lead the Eagles first-team offense to a preseason touchdown.

You know, it's only one game, but man the 49ers looked awful yesterday. They didn't come to play, didn't look prepared, and just a really piss-poor effort in week one. Of course in this very thread I said I was nervous about this game because of it's on the road and the crowd noise, but this was an atrocious effort. Now New Orleans is coming in and the Niners will probably be 0-2. Some other thoughts about this game:

-So going by Singletary's logic when he spoke out against Nate Davis, can we cut the entire team and put them all on the practice squad? They all were not motivated or prepared to play today, and neither were the coaches. Right now, I would rather see anyone, including Davis, over Smith. If that means giving up this year, so be it. Really pissed off at that effort today. :(

-So Crabtree and Davis didn't need the preseason ha? I bet the coaching staff is regretting that decision. Oh, and the coaching staff looked really really bad yesterday too. First game where I'm starting to question Singletary as a head coach and taking the Timby method to address Jimmy Raye:

Dear Jimmy Raye,

Get off your fat ass and draw up some fucking creative plays you piece of shit. Stop this nonsense of refusing to pass the fucking ball and actually not going 1-15 on 3rd fucking down.

Yes it's only week 1, but that was fucking embarrassing. At least the Giants won and got back into a tie with the Padres.

Seeing as I have a pair of dogs lying on my feet as I type this, I can't root for Vick.

Oh, hello.

And the readers of Caste Football just had a collective aneurysm.

Vick wasn't excellent by any objective measure. He was excellent compared to Kolb during the game, but he still had flaws. And, no, it wouldn't have mattered. If Vick hadn't touched the ball, the question would still have been asked. The reporter wouldn't have had as much of an argument to back it up, but it would still have been asked. The rules for the reporter/Andy Reid relationship were established a long time ago, any the facts of an individual game can only change them slightly.

The fact is that Kolb will be given a chance to prove himself until it's clear he can't (I'm hoping to God he does prove himself and this game is more of a fluke). Vick isn't a long-term solution no matter what. To start Vick is to admit it was a bad idea to trade McNabb, simple as that.

The Texans looked like a real football team yesterday. :techman:

Next up, the Redskins. From the look of that Sunday night game, after our next two games (Redskins and Cowgirls) the Texans should start 3-0 this season. But, being a Texans fan, I know full well from experience that what the Texans do one Sunday does not always carry over to the next Sunday.

The Texans now have the same amount of wins in our division as we did last year: ONE.

I'm not sure why the sports world is surprised at this (although I did expect Indianapolis to beat them). Gary Kubiak has built one hell of a football team down there.

You know, it's only one game, but man the 49ers looked awful yesterday.

The Niners' biggest problem is that Alex Smith is a career backup at best. Management isn't willing to give up on him becoming the next big QB. The guy's been around long enough for everyone else to see that he's closer in caliber to Rex Grossman than Peyton Manning.

Exactly. It shouldn't take 6 years to develop a QB and the fact that Singletary is having some sort of man-crush on Smith doesn't look good for him or his coaching staff. How much longer are fans willing to go with Smith because I know I'm starting to say screw it. Also, everything the 49ers did (From not going after McNabb to making a mockery of Nate Davis) just because of their undying love to Alex Smith really pisses me off. I'm not saying Davis is better than Smith, but one has taken 6 years and what, 8 OC's to develop and the other looks good in the preseason, but doesn't get a chance to develop and get's called out by his coach on the same night he looked good in the preseason. What is Singletary seeing that I'm not, particularly in Smith.
