NFL Football 2009

My fiance' is a Bills fan, so I almost had to eat some serious crow on that one. I might have been giving her a little shit before the game started, you see... ;)

Say what...??!? :wtf:

Granted, my coverage of the NFL is currently limited to major sports websites and a handful of blogs since my freaking Xbox died and I can't watch TV, but none of those sites made the Packers out to be SB contenders.
Everyone on Fox picked the Packers to at least get to the NFC Championship as did a few guys from ESPN and CBS.

But, then again, those shows are but a frail copy of what they used to be. They have sold out to complete low-brow entertainment value. There really isn't any reporting or analysis anymore.

The only place to get that is NFL Network. And, I think as soon as they can get on all the cable/satellite outlets and get some more money, they're going to take over. They're just so much more professional over there. Compare Mayock and Kiper's draft analyses for instance.

Incidentally, everyone on NFLN not named Sterling Sharpe picked the Packers to finish second in the division.

As badly as the Bears played, the only people who think the Pack actually played well have to be the biggest fanboys on the planet. I'd call their overall game against the Bears barely above average, at best.
Yup.

Now, to be fair, it was week one and a lot of teams struggle early. But they were the apparent "hot team." One should expect more.

the Vikes are average on a good day

Eh..
Six Pro Bowlers (Seven had Henderson not got hurt.), one of the all time great quarterbacks, 40 or otherwise, the Best player on the Planet, a legitimate ROY candidate, the best defense in the division and arguably the NFC, and they're average on a good day? If you say so.

This sort of goes to my point. The Bears add an overrated quarterback and the Packers (Who won six games last year!) drastically change their defense around--something that rarely works well--and they're both "markedly better." The Vikings spent almost then entire off-season upgrading their special teams coverage (which was utterly dreadful last year and probably coast them two or three games) and they got a drastic improvement at the most important position in the game (something that was also dreadful last year), and suddenly they're worse.

I'd love to see what your prediction is for teams in the NFC...
Well, I don't like to make predictions. That's sort of the whole point with the idiocy of it all. How many people this time last year would've said the Cards were going to be in the Superbowl? No body has any idea, but these so-called "experts" act so absolute with it all.

My wife is a Pats nut. I would gave her a high five when they took the lead, but the way the refs were calling it last night, I was afraid I'd get 15 yards for roughing the mrs.

My bad. I don't know why but I had it in my head they were around .500 last season which isn't the case. I was probably going back a bit too far when they actually were .500.

Denver's D did look good, but it doesn't matter if it doesn't have an offense to back it up. I was thrilled when Denver won and was absolutely ecstatic over Stokley's catch, but they had no right to win that game. Not when the defense finally collapsed with 40 seconds to go, and not when the offense couldn't give them more than 6 points up until then. I'm hopefull, but I think we have a rough season ahead of us.

Couple of conflicting reports about Jerod Mayo's injured knee. Apparently one source says he'll be out 6-8 weeks, while another says it won't be that long. Here's hoping it's the latter.

That said, I was digging those throwback uniforms the Patriots were wearing Monday night. :techman:

Sprained MCL, so we'll see. Not season-ending, anyway, so good news.

Didn't care for the Pats' throwback jerseys. The helmets were fine (Pat Patriot isn't that bad), but didn't like the red/white uniforms. Got mad on the opening kickoff because I was only half paying attention, saw the red team running it back and doing well, and then realized that it was Moroney in there. Used to Buffalo being the ones in red.

Plus, it means one less game in the Blue jerseys, which I like...

^I heard 6-8 weeks on Sportscenter this morning too. Bummer, but at least he will be back.

And Buffalo has never had red jerseys, have they?

I love the Pat Patriot throwbacks. The Flying Elvis duds looked better to me during the Parcells/Bledsoe years. I never cared for them once they darkened the blue.

The Bills' home jerseys are a red/white combo with a bit of blue on it. Mostly, I wasn't paying attention, and saw red and white as options, and was used to the Pats having white or blue options, so initial reaction was "white"

Dood! Classic Patriots jerseys are the best! I've never liked them since the change in '93. (94?)

Eh, like I said, I liked the old Pat Patriot (vs the new Flying Elvis design), but didn't care for the jerseys. Just really like the current Blue jerseys (the white or silver ones, not so much).

Coming from a team that's known for their injury report shenanigan, this was surprising...

Quote:
The NFL has issued a total of $125,000 in fines against the New York Jets and former coach Eric Mangini for the team's failure to list quarterback Brett Favre's arm problem on injury reports last season.

NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson levied fines of $75,000 against the team; $25,000 against general manager Mike Tannenbaum; and $25,000 against Mangini, now the coach of the Cleveland Browns.

This is the typical Bills colored jersey. I guess there is some red on it, and the red socks too.

Yeah, I knew something didn't look completely right about those uniforms they wore on Monday. I'm no sports fan, so I wouldn't know if/why they changed uniforms, but the uniforms the Bills wore on Monday had a bit too much silver, in my opinion.

Anyone hear of the present some local teens decided to leave Leodis McKelvin the other day? They've apparently been identified as living in town, and being 16...which means that they go to my high school, and chances are I know them. Kind of embarrassing, actually.
:alienblush:

McKelvin's statement on the news about his not wanting the kids arrested, though noble, was entirely incomprehensible. I just thought I'd get that in there.

Also, andorian-embarassing? I think you mean awesome.

I'd have those little boogers arrested too.

Off to NY this weekend. I'll be watching Pats-Jets from behind enemy lines. Though with all the talk about 'embarrassing' the Pats and stuff like that out of Jets camp, I'd love to see the Pats steamroll them.

It's a shame they'll embarass the Pats, then.
