NFL Football 2009

Tomorrow night begins the 49ers full season era under new Coach Mike Singletary. I hope he does well. At least we don't need to worry about what he wants to wear on the sidelines. One of my pet peeves about Nolan. If you win, yeah gloat about the suit. If you suck, than shut up.

BREAKING NEWS: The Philaelphia Eagles signed Michael Vick to a two-year contract according to his agent.

story @ Yahoo! Sports

Seriously, what the hell? I know he's a talented QB, but why would any team want to touch him? For that matter, why would the NFL let him back in? If the NFL can forgive him, then it's time for MLB to induct Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame already.

People who have killed human beings have been let back into the league (see Leonard Little), so why not Vick?

I put my thoughts in the other thread, but the simple answer is I'm disappointed that we're the team that decided to give him a shot to come back. I figure there are other teams who might have some desperate need for him who can take the consequences of having him. The Eagles aren't one of them.

^Were you at the game?

I watched most of the Pats-Iggles game. Brady looked a bit rusty but pretty good for his first time back on the field.

Who the hell is this Julian Edelman guy?!? He looked good. And does anyone know why Welker wasn't in uniform?

Pretty surprised the Eagles signed Vick. Yeah, their backup QB is injured, but the injury is minor and with Vick suspended for the first 6 games, that wouldn't even be a factor. Vick may still be a great athlete, but the chaos he'll bring to the team doesn't make it worthwhile.

^Were you at the game?

At it? Sadly no. I barely had time to watch it, since I was working (I could only sneak a glance at the TV every so often). Based on the first half score (which gives a better impression of the first team), I gathered the Patriots were playing a lot better than the Eagles, but pre-season doesn't matter much.

And it's hard to find a decent analysis of the players now that Vick has overshadowed everything.

And the Juggernaut starts rollin'!

:techman:

Sadly, Bulger looks the same as he has the past two seasons. Slow, indecisive. Boller actually looked better.

The defense played well against the run, and got some breaks on turnovers.

Hey, after a 2-14 season any kind of win is good, even a meaningless pre-season one.

I dunno man, he may have looked that way, but stats definitely favor Bulger in this case... 4/4 77 yards vs. 3/9 25 yards?

Also, do you think Broncos fans are more pissed at McDaniels yet for Orton's fiasco tonight? OTOH, Chris Simms may turn out to be their starter...

The 49ers defense confused me tonight. I didn't think they had a really good game, yet they intercepted Orton 3 times. I just wonder if that was because Orton was just awful or if the defense was just decieving. The reason I didn't think the Defense was all that great was because they have the same problem they did last year, they can't get to the QB. I saw the first half and then the last quarter and if memory serves, I saw 4 sacks on 49ers QBs. I saw 0 on the Broncos and I think that goes a whole more further than interceptions. It really surprised me too given Singletary is a really defensive minded coach, hence the "we go out and hit people in the mouth" comments from last year.

Yes it's one preseason game and they won, but the defense does need a bit of work. The two players who impressed me tonight was Vernon Davis and Brit Miller. Davis with some great catches early on, and Miller with 2 touchdowns. As for the QB Competition, I think I was more impressed with Hill than Smith, but it's a bit close to call at this point. I hope Smith starts against the Raiders next week though.

Understood. But watching the game, I saw troubling signs that Bulger has not improved. First, on the opening drive of the game, Little stripped Clemens of the ball and the Rams got it on the Jets 23. The Rams initial drive went 4 plays, -3 yards, and a field goal.

Second, Bulger was sacked 3 times in just over one quarter.

Same old thing. Can't score touchdowns (even when handed one on a silver platter), and can't avoid the rush. This was the entire story of 2008 (aside from the O-Line injuries).

I'm not suggesting Boller start. Just frustrated that we're picking up exactly where we left off last year.

The Orton Era Begins!

Pretty soon I think Orton Will Hear A Boo.

Yes. I went there.

The Lions play their first preseason game today. That should be interesting. The Falcons will be bringing everything against the Lions. Since you know, the Lions were preseason champs last year.

Time for Detroit to defend that preseason crown!

Welcome to jokes the Chicago sports media came up with four years ago. :p

Also, tonight marks the beginning of Jake Utler's reign of terror over the NFC North.

What the fuck?!?
Ever since the Cutler fiasco/ trade, I've been defending Orton to my friends... "Oh, considering that he did decently with little more than a kick-returner as a target, I'm sure he'll do fine with real targets." And then he ends his first three drives as a Bronco with interceptions.

What. The. Fuck?!?

I try to support my team in whatever decisions they make, but I am ready to lead the call for Simms. Go back to Chicago, Orton.

Ooh, yeah, you have fun with that. Watch, whenever he throws off his back foot (like 70% of the time) he throws it right to a guy in the other jersey. Every throw is a crap shoot. I still suffer from Post Boller Traumatic Stress Syndrome myself. It's a debilitating illness that causes one to cringe whenever a QB drops back and looks downfield.

Kyle's a nice guy though. Good for him for getting another shot.

Go back to Chicago, Orton.

You can keep him. :)

Seriously speaking, Orton is a very competent quarterback who can hit near- and mid-routes like no other. He can also drink Jack Daniels like there's no tomorrow.

He absolutely cannot throw deep with any resemblance of ability, however.

I expect he will not fit well with the Broncos' high-flying offense.

I thought Cutler was the one who likes the bottle?
