NFL Draft Thread

I'm curious as to what my Jags will do. We need a DE, but the best two picks at our spot in the draft, that should be left, are giant reaches (Philip Merling, injury questions; Calais Campbell, inconsistent year).

Hopefully they'll just select the best available player.

In this draft, unless you need offensive-line (and maybe wide receiver) help, BPA is probably the best choice.

This is one of the weaker draft-classes in recent memory--though it can't be as bad as 2005.

I'm hoping that either Kenny Phillips (S, Miami of Florida) or Dan Connor (Penn State LB) are still on the board when the Giants pick at #31 - OLB and S are the Big Blue's main areas for reinforcement come draft day.

One of the axioms I hear often repeated is "don't draft for need, draft the best player available". Now... that may be situational, but I'd like to hear thoughts on what truth there is behind this.

Well, last year at this time most people would have suggestion a running back was the last thing the Vikings needed but they drafted one anyone because he was the BPA.

Guess what happened?

Clegg made my point already. By drafting the BAP, you not only get a hopefully fantastic player, but prevent him from going to other teams, sometimes divisional rivals. Addition by subtraction.

By drafting for need, sometimes you reach and try to shoehorn in a player that may not fit.

Allen is now a Viking!!!!!!!!

Sounds like the Vikes will only have one pick on Sunday (2nd) as they gave up the first and both third rounders. But I don't care!

Error Rodgers must be craping in his panties right now...

This has always been Ozzie Newsome's strategy with the Ravens. Of their 7 top-ten picks since the franchise came to Baltimore, 5 (Ogden, Boulware, MacAlister, Jamal Lewis and Terrell Suggs) have gone to the Pro Bowl. That's the best record of all NFL teams, so I'd say it's a decent approach.

Maybe that's why the Packers are interviewing Dante Culpepper: Cannon fodder.

Bingo. Check the horrible drafting of running backs the Bears have had the last 15 years: Rashaam Sallaam,Curtis Enis,Anthoney Thomas, and now Cedric Benson.

Da Bears have been jinxed when it comes to drafting backs though :D - several of the aforementioned busts were actually quite highly rated going into the draft, only to bomb in the Windy City.....

Awesome trade for Minnesota. Fills a need. Don't like the 2 3rd rounders we handed off but no matter. We need depth and maybe a QB to challenge Jackson.

Not long until the draft. Once again, watch for Joe Flacco (since I'll probably pass out from boredom before he gets picked).

1. Miami Dolphins - Jake Long, OT, Michigan

2. St. Louis Rams - Chris Long, DE, Virginia

3. Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College

4. Oakland Raiders - Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas

5. Kansas City Chiefs - Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU

6. Vernon Gholston, OLB/DE, Ohio State

7. New Orleans Saints (trade from New England) - Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC

I'm following the draft. Sort of. I really only care what the Texans do anyway.

The Ravens traded thier 8th pick to Jacksonville for the 26th pick plus two third-rounders and a fourth. Good move, I think. :techman:

ETA: Jags take DE Derrick Harvey with Baltimore's #8 pick.

Yeah, I think that was a good pick for the Ravens

Is it just me or are there more trades than usual? This draft also feels faster than usual. The Eagles look like they'll get their pick before I start banging my head out of boredom.

With the 18th pick overall, the Baltimore Ravens select Quarterback Joe Flacco from the University of Delaware.

Yes, I beat flamingliberal to this, I'm that excited ;)

I don't know about the first question, but I know there's a 10 minute this year rule for the picks themselves.

Interesting. There has been virtually no talk of him at all coming out of either the team or the press. It's a rather unusual move for them, given that Delaware is not really among the elite programs, and they have historically stuck almost exclusively to powerhouse schools in the first round. :vulcan:
