NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? What?

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

SO! Apparently the officiating has gotten so bad this season, it's being looked into. Goodell's in charge of it, though, so I don't expect much to come of it, other than some preening lip-service to the Owners Commission.

To be fair, there apparently seems to be a vacuum of institutional knowledge with so many new people in the ref pool:
The most frequently identified culprit is a sudden experience drain. Over the past two seasons, the NFL added 23 new officials, and 18.5 percent of officials are in either their first or second season. Blandino said the league needed to improve a largely static roster of officials. In 2013, only one NFL official had one or two years of experience. In 2012, there were two. It now has an officiating corps that’s in better physical condition but lacks experience.
A reasonable contributor to the poor performance we've seen, and not an insurmountable one. I give it a couple more seasons before they start really clicking and getting NFL-caliber experience.

That finish! I turned off the TV the moment Rodgers got tackled on that ridiculous pass the ball around Keystone Kops style play. I missed the best part :(

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

I missed it too, but I hear it was absolutely stunning to behold.

Always liked ol' A-Rod. He never struck me as being a QB with entitlement issues like what we've seen in the past few years with others. Glad he pulled it off.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

He is taking a beating this year with that horrendous offensive line. He is basically a one man band out there on offense but Rodgers is a QB that you watch and can safely say that no one in the league can do what he does. That throw was ridiculous.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

As they said on the broadcast last night "Who else can be running for his life towards the sideline then with a flick of the wrist throw a perfect pass 40 yards down the field?"

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

well, to be fair, that "facemask" call helped. Haven't really seen an angle that justifies the call yet. At best he was on the shoulder pad.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

Well, untimed downs are the trendy Christmas gift this year.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

I don't really fault the officials for making the call they did. At full speed, it absolutely looked like a facemask.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

^ Nice clip.

We have to remember that refs see things at full speed, and have to determine what part of a voluminous rule book is being violated and then make the physical action of whipping out a flag.

That's tough, so I don't doubt they have built in mental shortcuts in place - for instance, if hands head towards the face, look for a head turn because that's a face mask.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

And iffy call or not, it doesn't change the fact that the Lions were up 20-0 in the third and managed to blow it. On the final play, the Lions had players guarding the sidelines on an untimed down.

Caldwell shit the bed, rolled around in it, and then licked the sheets a bit for good measure.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

Which is what Caldwell does. When the Packers scored their first touchdown, I saw the second membrane slide down over his eyes, and I thought "Yep, he's going to screw this up."

I don't think the rulebook is to blame. Everyone knows what a facemask is. It's just one of those plays that looked like something else in real time. An argument could be made they should be able to review it, but I understand the screw up. Still, it's a shame it happened.

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

Lions blew it, and Caldwell sucks. From a rule book perspective, it would be better to bring back the 5 yard penalty for 'incidental' facemask vice just having 15 yards for everything and not letting the refs have any leeway

The Bears went from pretty good to truly awful. Letting Gabbert run wild in regulation to tie then giving up a huge TD pass in OT.

FU©&ing Bears.

So...What's new?

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

^ They aren't doing bad enough to get a good draft pick. Now, if they could lose out....

Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha

Loved the Seahawks game today. Russell Wilson has been having an amazing series of games recently. Something about the loss to AZ at home lit some fire in the team and they've been doing much better since.

I think it's still an outside shot to win the division (unless Arizona suddenly crashes hard, unlikely). Being 5th seed is....OK, I guess. As long as we make it to the play offs there's a chance.
