Marrone is telling the Jets he wants a say in who they hire for their GM vacancy.

I too would like to pick my own boss.

:D :D

Buffalo really screwed up here. The Bills just went 9&7 with Orton as their QB.

This guy can coach and the guys play their ass off for him.

Buffalo didn't fire him, he opted out of his contract.

He asked for an extension, they denied him.

He asked for extensions for his assistants, they denied him.

They had their chance.

...and I heard this morning that they still have to pay him 4 mill next year?

The Bears would do good to get him.

He's almost certainly going to the Jets, since they scrambled to get their Rooney Rule interview done the minute he announced he was bailing from the Bills. In any event, modern offensive line coaches turned head coaches tend to be crazy conservative (whatup, Mike Tice), and Marrone's tenure at Syracuse and Buffalo sure put him in that basket for me. I have no interest in him going to Chicago.

I think he's the best you can get this year.

You do you want to see leading Da-Bears next year?

The best? Seriously? The Bills' offense sucked a huge dong this year and was propped up by Kyle Orton's washed-up corpse being able to pull a rabbit out of a hat. The only remarkable thing about the Bills was their defense, and that's on Schwartz.

In a perfect world, the Bears hire Rex Ryan. But I don't think he'd get along with Ted Phillips or the McCaskeys. In any event, they need to get a GM in place, first -- the last thing a team in rebuild mode needs is to have a GM stuck with a head coach he didn't hire.

You know, I've never thought about it, but isn't it weird that the same guy who picks players picks staff as well? A coach wanting a say in a GM makes sense because, if I were a coach, I'd want to make sure his personnel decisions are on the same page as me when it comes to offensive and defensive scheme. But I do agree it's weird that you would choose the guy who makes the decision whether to keep or fire you.

Hoooooooooooly shit, there's word that Chip Kelly is losing a power struggle with GM Howie Roseman and could be on his way out of Philadelphia.

Uh... what's a Rooney Rule?

The Rooney Rule was established about ten years ago or so, requiring that teams interview minorities for their head coaching vacancies. It's called that because of Steelers owner Dan Rooney, who has historically been a proponent of hiring minority coaches.

Yeah, I don't think it's quite that bad yet, but shit sure got real complicated real quick. Certainly, it's not Chip Kelly in charge. Given he's got a lot of options, it definitely seems like a situation where, if pushed too far, he can easily walk. But it might not be that situation just yet.

And now the Eagles have announced that Roseman has been kicked upstairs to "vice president of football operations" and Kelly now runs player personnel. (Edit: And scouting.)

What the fuck is going on over there? You fire Kelly's guy in Tom Gamble, and then you give him a promotion?

Poor Bonz. Her boys lose at home. Bad way to start the year...

As for Arizona, well...when you're that deep into your QB pool, this stuff is bound to happen. I mean, 78 yards of total offense. Yikes.

Today's playoff matchups:

Bengals at Colts, followed by Lions at Cowboys.

Oddly, this was the exact same lineup forty-four years ago on December 26, 1970, the first ever day of post-merger playoff games.

That day featured a pair of shoutouts:
Colts 17, Bengals 0
Cowboys 5, Lions 0

The last coach with any real intensity was hired by Hallas himself (aka: Ditka).

Mind you, Da Coach went off the rails, but when he kept it together he was a damn good HC.

Wannstedt had a little fire, but not a lot else.

Whatever else, Ryan is an intense guy. Too much so for the McCaskeys.

Change the name to the Mickey Rooney Rule; no one over 5’2″ gets a Head Coaching gig.
