NFL 2012 - Drive to Glory

The Rams were officially eliminated from the playoff race today, despite a nice win at Tampa Bay.

They've got a lot of work to do to make it to the next level. When a defensive back is second on the team in touchdowns, you know you have a serious problem on offense.

Still, the Rams have improved quite a bit over last season, when they were 2-14. And with two first round draft picks in each of the next two years, and the youngest team in the NFL, things are looking up. A big thanks to Jeff Fischer for bringing a new attitude and a serious defense to St. Louis.

Bears need to win and the Vikings need to lost in order for the Bears to make the playoffs.. unless the 49ers pull out a miracle.

I needed to maintain my healthy lead, but my opponent had Damaryius Thomas who turned in a stellar effort with 102 yards, 9 catches, and a TD. Meanwhile, I had one of this year's fantasy studs, Trent Richardson, and he was laying an egg. Congrats. Both of my fantasy teams went down in flames as soon as the playoffs started. Too many injuries and too many stupid moves on my part.
 
A family member asked me before last night's game which two teams I thought were most likely to reach the Super Bowl. Without much thought, I said San Franciso vs. New England. Yeah.... that opinion has changed.

Seattle's on an insane hot streak right now, so they'll be one to watch out for. If Dallas beats Washington next Sunday, I'm imagining them getting the hell beat out of them by the Seahawks. Hard to say who the NFC's #6 seed will be at this point. Could be Minnesota, Chicago or (less likely) the NY Giants.

On the AFC side, obviously Bill Belichick, Tom Brady and the Pats are always in the discussion, though now you've got Houston as a legitimate contender for the first time ever. Arian Foster's recent health problem is a great concern though. And while I'm on the subject of high profile former UT Vols-turned-NFL stars, Peyton Manning.... 'nuff said.

Seriously though, it's amazing to me how Peyton's been able to not only come back from four neck surgeries, but also that he's back to where he was when he left off and has now turned Denver back into the elite team it was when Elway was still the QB. His former team has obviously been left in good hands as well. The work that Andrew Luck and the Colts have done in 2012 is truly inspiring. Hopefully they won't be a one-and-done playoff team. The Baltimore Ravens I'm less sure about. In the end, it seems that it'll all depend on their injury list as to how well their season will end.

So I really don't think I can accurately predict who's gonna be in the Super Bowl, but I think the matchup I'd be most intrigued by would be Denver vs. Seattle. Would also be neat to see Houston get there, if Denver is unable.

As a Peyton fan (I'm a Colts fan, but I just don't think this is their year) what I think would be fantastic would be this:

Wildcard Round: Denver gets a bye.
Divisional Round: Denver gets a rematch with New England, wins.
AFC Championship: Denver gets a rematch with Houston, wins.
Super Bowl: Denver gets a rematch with Atlanta, wins.
 
I think both Houston and Atlanta are paper tigers.

In the NFC, it's tough to look at what Seattle has been doing and not think they are a legitimate contender. Lynch is a monster. The Packers look pretty solid too.

In the AFC, New England and Denver are the cream of the crop. I think everyone else is on another level.

I think a Denver/Seattle Super Bowl is a real possibility.
 
I think I'm getting a Darth Belichick hoodie tomorrow, and I get to cut the sleeves of myself!

I agree. Atlanta looks like the prototypical #1 seed that goes one and done in the playoffs. Houston, OTOH, I can certainly see making it to the AFC Championship game, but I'd count them as the underdogs against either Denver or New England in said game.

Denver only needs to beat Kansas City to win the #2 seed, and so I'd pick them over New England, only because they'll be at home in the likely Denver-New England divisional round game. They beat NE in the divisional round, and then Houston in the AFC Championship Game.

For the NFC, I'd also pick the #2 seed to win the conference this year, most likely Green Bay. San Francisco, likely ending up as the #3 seed, would need to win 3 games to reach the Super Bowl, and they've been too inconsistent this year to manage three consecutive victories against playoff teams. They oscillate between brilliance and mediocrity, not having managed to string together a 3 game winning streak since 2011.

Seattle is of course also a threat in the NFC, though they've been so much better at home than on the road, that I'm not sure they'll be able to manage 3 consecutive road wins. So I'll go with Green Bay in the NFC, though that depends on them winning next Sunday at Minnesota, which feels like a trap game for them.

Denver vs. Green Bay in the Super Bowl would also mean that Aaron Rodgers's second Super Bowl as Packers QB would be against a Denver Broncos team led by an over-35 year old future hall of famer QB......same situation that Brett Favre faced 15 years ago.

I agree that Atlanta does not appear strong, but you'd have to admit seeing a team win the Super Bowl by beating all three of the teams that they lost to during the regular season would be just desserts.
 
Dang it, just saw that, too!

I still can't believe that McElroy was sacked 11 times. There's more wrong with that team than it's quarterback play. Maybe start with an offensive line and some wide receivers?
 
Apparently he hid the injury and only talked it over with teammates before coming clean to the trainers. Not smart medically, but you can see why he would do so as a marginal bench guy trying to make something out of a couple of starts.

The whole situation screams for cleaning house after the season. Blow it up an start over.
 
The Raiders have bypassed Matt Leinart and named Terrelle Pryor the starter for their season finale against San Diego.
 
The Vikings look way more motivated to make the playoffs than Green Bay is to be the #2 seed right now.

If the fucking Bears had beaten the Vikings a while back, this game wouldn't matter.
