NF: Treason discussion thread (SPOILER)

I must say I felt Dr Villiers death more than Dr Selar's. I'm not sure why. I've never been really impressed by the Selar character.

Finally got my copy this morning, I have already started it. Have to avoid the spoilers on here!!!

Aw, come on! Where are all of the New Frontier fans?

Boo!

Well I read it, and what did I think?

Wow.

Just wow.

Un-bloody-believable...

Peter David has been writing NF for more than a decade, and there is no way...

no way...

THAT THEY SHOULD EVER LET HIM STOP!

Treason was one of the best books I have read in aaaages!

He was firing on all cylinders, I was worried that he would make Calhoun + co a little unbelievable. Suffice it to say my fears are ungrounded. If anything this book was a little too serious, but I'm not complaining, it was a refreshing change of pace.

It wasn't the typical who-dunnit style story, and being NF it left a few loose ends. But they weren't niggling loose ends, they were OMG when is the next book going to be available!

So yeah, good book!

As soon as I finish one of the books I was reading I was going to star Treason. I've only got 70 something pages left in the Dresden Files book, so I'll probably be done with that in the next few days.

I can't remember when the last time was that I couldn't put down an NF book. And that's how Treason affected me the last 100 pages or so, I wanted to find out how it ended now, not later!

I was grateful for my vacation and two nights of insomnia. Waking up at 4.30am, in a strange bed, is not so bad when you have unread NF pages awaiting.

I'm generally a very slow reader; most books take me at least a week, and sometimes more if I have other stuff going on. I read 'Treason' in less than 48 hours. It was pure pleasure. A fantastic entry in the series.

Just finished it. I really enjoyed it, the story successfully weaved all the major characters into the story. I wonder what will happen with Robin Lefler now? will she remain on the Excalibur, I hope she is not the means that they use to control Morgan. the head to head between Morgan & Calhoun is one story thread that takes up a future book.

This one book was great but it was not enough after a 3 year wait. I hope that the release schedule can become a bit more regular like once a year. Alternatively another New Frontier comic series from IDW would be great.

I didn't get the impression that Robin would have any influence on Morgan either. So the head to head is probably still going to be there even if Robin stays on the ship.

This is my review of "Treason". It contains spoilers:

It has been a very long wait but to me it was definitely worth it. “Treason” is not one of my top favourite New Frontier books but nevertheless, it is excellent.

Both, Robin Lefler and Dr. Selar showed how far these mothers are willing to go to protect their children. I could understand them very well. There is certainly very little I wouldn`t do to help my child should she ever be in danger.

Especially Selar`s sacrifice was very touching. Selar has never been one of my favourite New Frontier characters but I could sympathize with her and certainly didn`t dislike her. I wouldn`t have wished her dead although I must admit when I started the book I had the feeling from early on that there wouldn`t be a happy end for her. But although I was right I was also wrong. Peter David is very good at surprising his readers and he managed to do so in this book quite a few times.

As with the fate of Janos in an earlier book Selar`s road ended in a touching bittersweet story. The last moments with Burgoyne were beautifully written. I agree, what Selar did was wrong. My experiences made me the person I am and that includes how I felt and how I moved on from that point. By taking the negative feelings about their relationship away Burgoyne will never get the opportunity to fully understand the sacrifice Selar made and to come to terms with what happened between them. S/he won`t have the chance to grow and move on from it. I am sure when s/he finds out s/he won`t feel gratitude for Selar`s decision but will always wonder what s/he took away from hir and see this as a form of betrayal.

I didn`t expect a (sort of) happy end for Xy who now has the chance for a full life. If he gets it, who knows? With Peter David as the author, there are no guarantees but I would like it very much if Xy will be allowed to live and to have his own family one day.

Hm, Selar`s DNA was found in that cloning factory. That means theoretically there is a chance that Selar will be back. On the other hand, only a body can be cloned, not a personality. Nevertheless, this would be interesting.

Robin Lefler has been my least favourite New Frontier character from the beginning of NF and although she has matured somewhat (better late than never comes to mind) also in this book I could understand Calhoun`s reactions towards her especially at the end of the book very well because I shared his feelings. Cwansi is a remarkable baby and the way PAD portrayed him was excellent. He is certainly very much like his dad but also has a lot of his mother in him. I am curious how this child will develop although I must admit, if the next book is Robin Lefler free I won`t complain.

That Morgan Lefler is still alive (in her special way) was a surprise. This woman always had a dark side about her and this development in the book makes a lot of sense to me. I understand that PAD has to deal with this because having such a powerful being on board is too convenient whenever there is trouble. I am sure, that was the main reason why McHenry left. I am sure something bad is going to happen.

I am glad that Kalinda left and hopefully we won`t see her again. I have never been a fan of that character and her strange powers. “The Quiet Place” is easily my least favourite NF book and I welcome it a lot that Xyon finally ended that relationship.

I missed Moke but I can understand that PAD didn`t want to add another conflict to this mix. Nevertheless, at least he was mentioned. It is sad that the relationship between Calhoun and him didn`t recover after what happened in the previous book. I can`t blame Moke for being angry with his adoptive father. Hopefully things will get better between them. Hm, and Moke can beat Xyon in combat? I didn`t expect that.
Calhoun is an excellent leader but his parenting skills often leave a lot to be desired. Should he and Shelby ever have a child at least he wouldn`t be a single parent.

The D`myurj are an interesting new villain in the Star Trek universe. After the Borg threat is gone these beings are obsessed with the opposite. The invasion of the Trident was chilling to read, no less than that of a Borg invasion. PAD didn`t pull his punches and I expected casualties. What happened felt very realistic to me. At least the Trident characters that are the most important to me are still alive and I am grateful for that.

The last sentence in the book is a really interesting teaser. It left me wondering: Was that the real Nechayev? It could be that in the next book Calhoun will become a target of these beings. Hopefully I won`t have to wait such a long time again.

"Once a year" is essentially the pattern. PAD has rarely missed a year with new NF. Checking Memory Beta, only 2002 saw a year with only a reprint to keep the wheels going.

PAD even made sure that the main universe characters appeared in his MU storyline, and then used elements of his MU stuff in the comic mini-series. So the only people who've had a three year wait were hardcover collectors who choose to ignore the MU and comics.

In any case, if you check word counts for "After the Fall", "Missing in Action" and "Treason", and imagine those tales coming out in John Ordover's time as editor, each volume would probably have been half of a MMPB duology, both parts of which would have appeared on the shelves side-by-side.

So PAD's NF output really hasn't changed much at all. (You've really only missed three new cover designs.)

^^^ I hadn't thought of it that way. :)

I still have to read the Mirror Universe stuff. And I need to reread the anthology; I read it before reading the main series. I own the Mirror Universe stuff; I just never got around to reading it, which was a mistake, as they are later referenced in the other stories - which is cool.

Must say I agree with EMH, this thread is very short at two pages, where once New Frontier was described as the best series of Trek books, it seems to have fallen down the scale now.

^I don't know everybody else's reasons, but I saw Treason at the store Friday and refused to buy it. I was aghast at the size of it, swathes of blank space and the I-can-read font size; I've reconcilled to the idea of trade paperbacks if I get more story than an MMPB out of it, but this looks like just a regular-sized tale transformed into an eyechart to make it stretch across a trade, a transparent money grab. If it comes out in MMPB I'll buy it, and even if it doesn't I might eventually cave, but for the moment I'm too indignant.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

To be honest, I was glad of a bigger font size, I've been getting eye strain and headache trying to read the Mission Gamma books lately, and that's after getting my glasses.
