The one thing that truly pulls me as an viewer out of ST XI is the end, where Kirk makes the rank jump from newly graduated cadet to captain with almost no command experience. I know, however, that some people love the idea, and think he deserved it for saving Earth.
Maybe as a compromise, the writers of STXII could set the plot around Stardate 2263.4 or something, rather than an immediate sequel to ST XI in something like Stardate 2260.1 or something. By putting some year gaps in between, those of us that have a hard time suspending our disbelief about that promotion can at least say, "Well ... maybe there is a five-year gap between the Narada destruction climax and Kirk's promotion ceremony! ...and the reason they were back in cadet uniforms was that they were also meeting back at the academy to mark the five-year anniversary of the loss of so many classmates in the Nareda attack on Vulcan, back in '58!"
They probably wouldn't do that ... so I'll just have to accept nuKirk is a super genius who will be able to handle complex diplomatic situations, first contact missions, etc., despite his cadet-only experience, and in command of the "Federation's new flagship", as Pike calls it!
