News Next Arrowverse Crossover to Include Batwoman

This issue of Teen Titans was the last issue of any DC comic published prior to the start of the first issue of Crisis.

You may be thinking of an earlier issue. The one I'm referring to was Tales of the Teen Titans #58, "Victor Victorious," published in October 1985, and Crisis began in April '85.

The thing with the bat-signal--and with Batman in general come to think of it--is that it's 90% about psychological warfare, not practicality. In the real world, nobody looks up into the city sky at night very much, but then in the real world, there isn't an armoured nutcase that has a tendency to leap down from the rooftops and beat five kinds of crap out of petty street criminals in dark alleyways.

That kind of thing is bound to keep most street criminals with at least one eye on what little sky they can see...or better yet, stay away from dark alleyways on nights when the signal is lit. As has been stated, this is the age of twitter and burner phones, so rest assured, if the signal is lit, word will get around fast. They don't need to always see it for themselves.

Damn. I know there's an issue of Titans where a villain is kidnapped by the Monitor and winds up on the satellite and is told there's a crisis at hand.
I'm going to have to go to the storage unit at some point this weekend and see if I can find the relevant comics.

I just realized something that might be obvious to more experienced DC readers. I found the latest volume (#8) of the New Teen Titans trade paperback collection at the library, and toward the end of it, there was a bit where one of the villains the Titans were fighting suddenly got teleported away by the Monitor, who told him the CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS was coming (with the actual logo in his speech balloon) and his help was needed. So I looked into it more, and apparently the Monitor went around recruiting heroes and villains from across the multiverse to prepare for the Crisis.

So that seems like the simplest explanation for how all these heroes in "Elseworlds" are brought together -- the Monitor recruits them all to help with some crisis, though not necessarily the Crisis, which is still supposed to be 6 years away (although all the timeline alterations the speedsters and Legends have brought about might change that). And since he can recruit multiple heroes from a single world (e.g. Flash and Green Arrow), that doesn't rule out Batwoman being from Earth-1 or Earth-38. Anyway, it's possible that the scenes in Gotham City or the stuff with Clark and Lois might be setup scenes, showing the characters going about their normal lives and adventures before the Monitor whisks them away.
That would fit pretty well with what we've seen of Elseworlds so far.

It occurred to me... if Barry and Oliver are switched into each other's identities, what if the same thing happens to Supergirl and Batwoman?

With the exception of Oliver being in the picture with Iris, it feels like the being of an episode of Quantum Leap. I would almost expect Oliver’s reaction to being kissed is to say “Oh, Boy!”

From the little we know at this point I doubt Supergirl and Batman switch identifies too. That first picture Stephen Amell released of John Wesley Shipp in his 1990 Flash suit was a group shot. Amell and Grant Gustin were wearing each other’s suits. But Melissa Benoist was wearing her usual Supergirl costume.

It's a 3-parter involving multiple alternate realities, not just one. We've seen photos of Amell and Gustin in several different costumes. And the photos we've seen are only for location shooting, because there's no way to hide that from the public when everyone has a camera in their pocket these days. We've seen next to nothing of the material shot on soundstages or indoor locations, as most of the 3-parter probably will be. The fact that we've only seen one photo of Batwoman in costume tells us that most of her material must have been shot indoors or at night, maybe up on rooftops rather than at street level. So we really have no idea yet what Batwoman's role in the story will be.

I doubt they'd launch Batwoman by having her play Supergirl. I feel we can mess around with Ollie and Barry because we know them well enough by this point. Maybe have Supergirl swap with a reality where she landed before Kal or with a red son type reality but I expect Batwoman to be playing batwoman so we can get to know her.

Again, I doubt that the body swap will persist throughout the entire 3-part crossover. I'm assuming it'll just be part of it. So there'd be plenty of opportunity to get to know Kate as herself.

Wow, she looks great.
EDIT: We've got another teaser.

Okay, so I was wrong about the body swap not lasting through all 3 parts. But how in the world does an Arkham Asylum staffer rewrite reality? That seems like a contrived way to bring Batwoman into the story.

Well Doctor John Deegan is likely their version of comic book villian Doctor Destiny. Whose alter ego is the shorter John Dee.

John Wesley Shipp posted more pictures of himself in the suit this week on Instagram. Non spoiler. Just him in his trailer with the cowl down. But it’s curious that he not only hashtag those with #arrowversecrossover but also #100thepisode too. It will be The Flash’s 100 Episode the week before. It makes sense that his character from the 1990 series would be reintroduced than.

I love it when they do comics-style covers. Who's the artist? There's a signature just above the Flash lightning on the lower left, but I can't tell what it says.

It's kind of weird to see a cover composition where Superman is the least emphasized character. I mean, he's about on a par with Batwoman in placement, I guess, but he's also the only character depicted as behind anything, both the pipes and the lightning, so that pushes him into the background more than the others. Also, his pose doesn't really make him feel like part of the scene. Barry and Ollie are fighting each other, Supergirl's trying to stop them, Deegan is cackling evilly at what he's wrought, Batwoman is going after Deegan, but Superman is just in a generic flying pose, his body language not reacting to anything else in the scene. So that could've been improved, though the rest is good.
