News? Stories from Dubious Sources

If Disco is really doing S4 & 5 back to back, does this imply any of the following?:
  • Section 31 is no longer moving forward as it was originally supposed to start after S3 was completed
  • Season 5 will be the last season of Discovery.
  • SNW will be produced in parallel to Disco s4/5
    • If S31 is still happening, it could be done in parallel prior to SNW.
I don't think so? Why would that be implied?

Strange New Worlds and Section 31 are filmed in Toronto (just like Discovery), but use different studio buildings. So you can film multiple shows at the same time.

Exactly. Discovery is filmed at Pinewood Toronto. Section 31 and Strange New Worlds are to be filmed at the new CBS Studios Canada in Mississauga (outside Toronto)

if anything, the filming seasons back to back is to prevent a missed year due to a potential writing strike

Does the CBS studios site allow for filming of more than one show simultaneously? I thought it was setup to allow for 2 shows. If Disco is using one studio and there is only room for one other show to be made, which show is it?
I thought I read that the plan was to start doing S31 immediately after Disco S3. Obviously that did not happen. In the meantime they made a formal announcement of SNW with an actual title of the show. There has been no announcement of cast or title of the S31 show. This makes me wonder if SNW is priority 1 and what that means for S31.

As for why filming 2 seasons back to back might mean that the show is ending, Isn't that one obvious? It's a pattern we see in other shows. Some shows that plan ahead know how they want to end it. Others get told they only get 2 more seasons so finish it up. Why would any actor want to go back to back without a break unless it was the only way to get the last season made? It's not like ending after 5 seasons is a bad thing when you have multiple shows in the franchise being made.

It's just speculation. It could also be because the delay in S4 pushed it right up against the plan for S5 that they decided to keep it that way.

Filming two seasons back to back doesn't mean the show is ending. Strange New Worlds and Section 31 will also film seasons 1 & 2 back to back, if you believe the reports. Doesn't mean those shows end after season 2 at all.

Wasn't it already announced the reason the two seasons were filming back to back was because of Sonequa Martin-Green being pregnant?

As I said before I am very dubious of back to back seasons stuff. There has been rumors of that happening with Discovery, Picard, SNW and S31 without any official confirmation. In case of S31 the series itself hasn’t been announced yet.

I believe it when they officially announce it. Lower Decks was ordered for 2 seasons and they announced it. Kurtzman has said that Prodigy has the same deal. If any of live action shows gets a 2 year deal there is no reason to keep it a secret.

doing this makes sense economically so it will be something they consider. But actors, especially Sir Patrick, may veto it. Anson Mount already complained about being away from his family for too long doing Discovery season 2.

i prefer the writers plan one season at a time.

that is just an announcement that it is in active development with writers working on it. Later articles specifically say it hasn’t been greenlit yet:

I remember Kurtzman felt pretty confident that it would be greenlit once the pilot script was done and go into production right after Discovery S3. But there has been kind of strange silence about it since.

You wrote it hadn't been announced, whilst it was...

It's true that it hasn't been greenlit (as far as we know). Some 'insiders' claim it's because of Yeoh's schedule, others say it was because the premise of the show needed a lot more tweaking...

I think SNW will get made...in about three years. The Section 31 show I predict will end up in development hell. And I’m ok with that.

And with the extended time to complete the VFX, it makes more sense to give the second season a little bit more lead time to finish everything before it airs. Also has the added benefit of more time for the writers to break stories and write scripts for subsequent seasons.

I have my doubts about Section 31 ever getting made. I imagine Strange New Worlds will debut in early- to mid-2022.
