Newbie here, I watched these episodes to get a grounding for other series, am I good to move on?

Don't forget to read the books inbetween!!!

Some of the them are Relaunch novels (the series continues)
Some are backstories (Terek Nor series for DS9)
Some follow certain characters, some follow certain ships.

Those are mainly for after you watch the shows. Usually you watch them when they come out, but I would suggest watching STVI:TUC before TNG.

I think he SHOULD watch Spock's Brain so he knows why everyone thinks it's so terrible.

Still, a bad episode of The Original Series is still better than most of Trek!!!

I highly recommend "The Alternative Factor" if you're suffering from insomnia.

Spectre of the Gun and The Empath are underrated and certainly worth review.

Spectre of the Gun would be good if it was 30-35 minutes instead of 51. Feels like they ran out of plot and started killing time halfway through. The ending conceit is kind of eye-rolly '60s hippy stuff too.
