Newbie here, I watched these episodes to get a grounding for other series, am I good to move on?

So I'm a relatively newer Trek watcher, and I used this list (http://www.denofgeek.com/us/tv/star-trek/248597/star-trek-an-episode-roadmap-for-beginners) to watch all of these TOS episodes to get enough knowledge in order to watch TNG, VOY, etc.
  • SEASON ONE: The Man Trap, Where No Man Has Gone Before, The Naked Time, The Enemy Within, Dagger of the Mind, The Corbomite Maneuver, The Menagrie I and II, Balance of Terror, Arena, The Return of the Archons, Space Seed, Errand of Mercy
  • SEASON TWO: Amok Time, Mirror Mirror, Metamorphosis, Journey to Babel, Friday's Child, The Deadly Years, The Trouble with Tribbles, A Private Little War, Patterns of Force
  • SEASON THREE: The Enterprise Incident, Day of the Dove, The Tholian Web
The only other "must-watch" episode that I can think of is "The City on the Edge of Forever", but are there any essential TOS episodes that I should see before I move on to the other series?

All the rest? :p

I'd definitely catch "City". The other episode that stands out as missing to me is "The Devil in the Dark" from Season 1...a good "what Trek is all about" episode.

Definitely watch "The Doomsday Machine" and "The Ultimate Computer" (both Season 2). They are unmissable. Personally I also like "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky" and "The Cloud Minders" from Season 3 because of their classic sci-fi themes. Ah, who am I kidding, I find all TOS amazing! Why can't you watch all episodes of TOS?

Really you don't have to know much at all about TOS to watch the later shows.
If TOS just isn't your thing, yeah, you're good to move on.

Jesus, "Doomsday Machine" wasn't on the list? Definitely that one.

On the History channel Trek documentary tonight, Tape Nimoy and Ronald D. Moore both mentioned "Devil in the Dark" as a favorite episode, so I'll do my superiority dance now.

If it's such a chore for you to watch Star Trek, then skip it.

You've obviously seen enough to get a sense of the show, and you still consider TOS like homework or eating your spinach? Move on. And go to the forum of a series you actually enjoy.

That's a little harsh...

I'll make sure to give those a watch! Thank you!

I don't consider it like homework. I just wanted a second opinion from more experienced viewers as to whether I've seen all of the great and must-see episodes from TOS before I move to the other series. And I'd rather stay here, thank you. The Trek community is so inviting, right? :nyah:
And then watch the movies.

:techman:
It's you from the other day! Hello once more! I've seen TMP and Wrath of Khan, and I'm excited to see the rest!

I'd add "A Taste of Armageddon" from season one (cowboy diplomacy), and "The Ultimate Computer" from season two (people being displaced by technology).

I'll make sure to give those a watch! Thank you!

Definitely throw "The Doomsday Machine" in there as well...hadn't realized that was missing when I posted before. That's a definite Top-10'er for the series.

Given that there are over 500 hours of televised Trek to wade through, I can't blame a new viewer for trying to cherry-pick the highlights...it's a sensible approach if you're going for a broader overview of the franchise.

Also good ones.

Make sure you catch "The Changeling". Then you're good to go, as far as I am concerned. It's not like you have to watch all the episodes on your first go. Welcome to TrekBBS!

My thoughts exactly! :techman: I was getting a lot of flak for not wanting to sit down and consume TOS in it's entirety, but with so much other Star Trek to consume it's hard not to get eager to move on to all of it's other great moments! And thank you! I'm really digging it here! :)

I'll add that in! And I'm glad that you get where I'm coming from. So much to watch haha!

Well, okay. You can watch "The Doomsday Machine." But if you don't love the show after that, I give up.

Try The Next Generation. And if you really want to stick to the decent stuff, start TNG at Season 3. That's when they really got their act together.
