New Voyages name change

Re: New Voyages name change..."5year mission"?

I heard...People might remember that orginially (for Paramount C&D letters sent to '5 year mission' for illegally collecting 'charity' exploded shuttle crew monies under Trek name) New Voyages was first called '5 year mission' and had to be legally changed.
Now another name change?

Re: New Voyages name change..."5year mission"?

Why lose all the brand recognition they've worked so hard for? Besides, the "New Voyages" name states what the show entails in a much clearer way.

Re: New Voyages name change..."5year mission"?

I like the name change. Did you have to get permission from paramount/cbs/whoever-owns-the-license-these-days* to make the change, james?

Are you planning on using the engine room from the phase II test footage? The one where they point the gun at the warp core? Just don't use those costumes...

Ya know, this is gonna be a great thing.

It will make it much more unique.

More power to James C. & Company.

I definitely like the direction James is taking the show. More than just continuing the voyage they are now bridging the gap between TOS and TMP. I'm looking forward to seeing where this takes us.

To be honest, I'm feeling a bit let down by this. I really enjoyed having so much be IDENTICAL to the original series, it really felt like we were getting more.

Now, it's becoming something else, and won't feel quite as special.

Actually, the series has been called "New Voyages" since the very first film. In fact. "New Voyages" is all that appeared onscreen as the series title on the first one.

It was AFTER that introductory project that James got permission from Paramount to go ahead and actually use the words "Star Trek" as part of the title.

I thought JT is Filipino.

Interesting, since "Sulu" is in fact an island province of the Philipines rather than a Japanese family name.

Some non-canon sources state that Sulu was supposed to be part-Filipino and part-Japanese. IIRC, this is in J.M. Dillard's coffee table book.

While the initial splash that New Voyages made centered on the excruciatingly beautiful detail of sets, props and costumes, Star Trek has always been about people and the stories. Something extraordinary happened to me when I read D.C. Fontana's script "To Serve All My Days" the first time--I heard the voices of Shatner, Nimoy, Doohan, and, of course, especially Koenig, et.al. in my mind as I read it--it WAS Star Trek.

Then, something even more extraordinary happened when I read the script "World Enough and Time" by Marc Zicree and Michael Reeves. When I read Kirk's lines, I heard Cawley, Spock--Quinn, Scotty--Root, but, of course Sulu was easy. Lim and Takei sounded so similar anyway.

Point is, the story telling had become so good, that our actors are what my mind heard as I read--not the originals. Star Trek is alive here at Phase II, not because the Enterprise looks the way it does, or because the paint colors are exactly right or the sound effects are so exacting--its because the stories are right and the performances are formidable.

Phase II will do nothing but continue to deliver Star Trek the way we've always known it--compelling stories about good people in fantastic situations and incredible places facing challenges and dilemmas that show how mankind triumphs over the negativity and pettiness we find ourselves inmeshed in today.

Star Trek did not stop being Star Trek when Kirk blew up the Enterprise--it kept right on going aboard a Bird-of-prey, because the Trek--the human adventure--was carried aboard her.

The incredible thing about James is that he has a knack for choosing and INSISTING on stories that are worthy of being told in the Trek universe. James Cawley will continue to deliver this Trek from whatever 'stage' the good stories we find take us to.

Set your minds at ease and enjoy the ride. Trek continues thanks to the human adventure James Cawley has involved me and so many other contributors in and we bring to you. It just goes to prove, Going Bold hasn't gotten Old.

Cheers!

I think in the same way as changing 'Star Trek' to 'James T. Kirk in the 22nd Century!" might cause some problems, a lot of people have grown fond of New Voyages and don't like dropping a title that has meant so much to them, not just because that was the title from the start, but because of what the words literally mean to a series that ended decades ago, and a series that's still held dear to Star Trek fans to date.

New Voyages still sound noble to me. and er...Phase II...?

That is exactly the truth. Phase II is an excellent change and i am excited to hear about this. Question: Will the title be changed on past episodes? And also will you add a second turbolift to the bridge? Thanks and keep up the good work!

I believe James said that the existing episodes will remain New Voyages episodes because "they are a product of their time." The new moniker will apply to the upcoming "Blood and Fire" and to future episodes as well.

So has Spock been recast as well? That's not Jeffery Quinn at the top of their homepage is it?
