New Voyages first episode?

Duane

Captain
Captain
I'm a bit confused about how many episodes have been made by the folks at New Voyages. Their web site claims that there are three episodes (if I read it correctly.)

I distinctly recall seeing an episode before the "Doomsday Machine" episode, then we had the Chekov episode and then the Sulu, which was really good.

I can't recall the plot or name. Can anyone help?

It was called "Come What May," but I don't remember much of the plot. A colony was attacked, but someone else swooped in to save them before the Enterprise arrived, I think.

I believe the New Voyages people treat this episode as a pilot and don't distribute it anymore, since they don't think it holds up against their later work. Someone else can correct me if I'm completely off-base about this, though.

it's sort of the red-headed step child in a way. But indeed should be remembered as there there first step in there epic journey, And look at what they have accomplished since then! :)

Come What May was the pilot, it was more of a test to prove that it could be done than anything else. It's not actively distributed anymore, though it can be found on some mirror sites.

In Harms Way (the doomsday machine episode) is considered to be episode 1 of NV, To Serve All my Days is episode 2 and World Enough and Time is episode 3.

The upcoming Blood and Fire 2 parter will be episodes 4&5.

Now I love their most recent works. But that first one just wasn't great. The one thing I disliked the most about that episode was the choice for the baddie... the Borg. Yeah, they kept them relatively anonymous as far as the Enterprise crew was concerend, but still, it was a bad decision to put them in.

"Come What May" on Youtube

From what I gather from the NV boards, CWM was a proof-of-concept and that James Cawley got talked into introducing TNG-like elements to the TOS setting which is opposite to his vision for NV. Some of those elements included the Q-like being, the "Borg," and making Rand a Tasha Yar-like character.

I like certain elements of it despite it being very fan boyish in execution. Even though their acting was in their early stages, I thought that John Kelly, James Cawley and John Quinn had a good chemistry. In fact, I still enjoy John Kelly's performance as Doctor McCoy. He's not as acerbic as De Kelly but there is that hint of compassion that carries well into his scenes. I've also enjoyed John Quinn as Spock and feel that Cawley is finally making Kirk his own with the last two efforts.

Plus, the actress they had for 'Nurse Christine Chapel' was HOT! (seriously)

I remember when I first watched "Come What May" on my computer. The story really served as a tool to allow them to try out the sets, their acting, camera work etc. I remember being awed by the sets and the amount of work they had put into it. I have watched CWM a few times-it is totally good to watch. In Harm's Way showed that they had gotten a much better grip on some of the dramatic aspects, and WEAT showed further development as well.

You gotta give 'em credit-they are really putting in the effort on these things!

Come What May has been something of a victim of revisionist history.

What it is classified as now, as a part of the greater whole (or rather, not a part of the greater whole) was not how we thought of it back when it was being produced.

At the time it was about 18 people (give or take a few) working round the clock to produce a TOS-based fan film for distribution on the internet. Whether or not any more would be made was not certain and in fact, at times we came close to not even completing CWM!

For me that's probably what makes CWM special - the fact that we pulled it off and it's also the show that was the start of a great adventure and scores of wonderful friendships.

Sure it's not as good as what came later (as I would hope and expect) but it was the first and we put our all into it. Given the small number of people involved it was quite a feat - just look at the number of people that worked on later efforts.

Believe me - it was a show we made to release and while it may, in retrospect, be viewed as a "dry run" that's not what it was billed as when we made it - to anybody inside or outside the project.

Hi John, when CWM came out, I was on Grand Cayman Island trying to recover from Hurricane Ivan's visit to Grand Cayman Island. I was sleeping on my boss's couch, we were running a radio station from borrowed offices off a gas powered generator, but we did have Internet, which was our lifeline for information and entertainment. CWM was a wonderful escape for someone in desperate need of a respite from the stresses of surviving in a terrible situation that reminded me at times of Mad Max.

Sure, it was by comparison, a bit crude and amateurish in comparison to what was to come, but at the time it was as welcome as rain in the desert. It gave me just a flicker of understanding of just how welcome Bob Hope and all the rest of the volunteer USO entertainers were and are to our homesick and lonely troops overseas.

You did far more good with that first effort than you'll ever know.

:)

Yeah, it never really matters "if" these things are perfect or not. Because they're fan films. They're never quite perfect. Fan films will never be perfect. But they are what they are, and they all have something that makes them worth watching... or we wouldn't watch them!

CWM is a part of fanfilm history in the same way that "The Cage" is a part of Trek history.

They've come a long way. Just watching 'World Enough and Time" I have to comment (as someone who really grimaced at the first two entries).

Effects: Much, much better. Almost as good as Enterprise in it's last season. The sets are above par (as they were in all episodes) but the effects look 10X what they were in the first two.

Acting: Also a big improvement over the first two outtings. Everyone seems to be getting their sea legs. Kirk is no longer channeling Shatner and is making the character his own.

Guest Stars: They add some real credibility to the series, however, you can only have so many "Look we have an old Sulu, Look we have an old Chekhov" episodes to reunite old and new.

Music: Also top notch! Crisp and clear with great melodies that are reminiscent of all the shows.

One complaint: All the episodes try to tie in dialog from the movies, which gets very annoying. Keep up the new and fresh dialog, it works very well.

Keep up the good work guys, can't wait to see the next entries. One word of advice though, try and cut these down to 30 min to 45 min productions. Though the eyecandy is good, I'm having an ADD attack after 35 min.

Wow--after five years, four episodes, one vignette, plus three others filmed and a fifth and sixth episode (5 & 6 are the same show: Blood & Fire, a two-parter), the post above is the FIRST time anyone has asked us to make it SHORTER . . . .

If it would help them come out sooner, I'd be for that. But you folks do such a great job, I say: Keep up the good work!!

:bolian:  :vulcan:
