New uniforms in Season 2 Trailer

That shows how easy it could have been to replace the turtlenecks to avoid the big gap. They could have even used a fake collar rather than making a whole undershirt.

I don't know what temperature they kept starships at, but those unis seemed like they would be pretty hot with a sweater and a heavy jacket.

Imagine having to sit at your station all day wrapped up like that. You'd think people would have revolted after wearing the comfy-looking TOS pajamas, but maybe they hated the TMP uniforms as much as we do.

The maroons are such an odd departure for Starfleet uniforms. Everything else is pretty sleek and utilitarian, lots of form-fitting jumpsuits and simple shirt/pants/boots combinations. Then you get these mad Salvation Army jackets covered in flaps, belts and doodads for 70 years.

As dress uniforms, fine, but these are clearly worn as day-to-day duty uniforms on board ships.

There's vague precedent for different branches of Starfleet wearing different classes of uniform. For a while, it seemed like starships wore TNG while starbases (or at least far-out ones like DS9) would wear DS9 jumpsuits. This didn't last long as it became clear that whole ships would wear jumpsuits (Voyager, Equinox, etc.) while other would mix and match (Enterprise-D). In losing their color palette, at least Starfleet largely got things together in the subsequent iteration and made a uniform that was, well, uniform across the board.

Here? That novel suggested that the exploration ships like the Enterprise got the full color swatches, while everyone else was stuck with off-TARDIS blue. This seems like a likely explanation for what we see here, and thus the first Prime universe iteration of the full-on red shirt! Discounting the red piping of ENT, neither the Cage nor DSC have had actual red uniforms.

I read somewhere, I thought it was on this board but now I can't find it, that the reason why the shirtless version appeared was that it was needed in a hurry for Jack Crusher, and the machine which made the trapunto collars was either broken or lost, so they improvised.

I'm not sure that story fits with the timeline (i.e. the crossover between TNG and the movie era) but it at least suggests the change wasn't a design choice so much as a practical necessity.

They were my favourites, I live the details and the 'off' colours of that era.

I don't think this really matters too much, because Desperate Hours must be set three or four years before Season 2, and several years after The Cage.

When you can create new uniforms at the touch of a button, I don't really have a problem with designs changing frequently.
TOS - "The Cage takes place circa 2254 Source: TOS - "The Menagerie" - which takes place in 2266; Spock testifies the events on Talos IV happened 12 years earlier.

ST: D's opening episode takes place in May, 2257 per Burham's own log entry at the start. I've not read "Desperate Hours" but if it takes place after TOS - "The Cage", but prior to the first episode of ST: D - there's only a 3 year span it could have occurred.

As for the start of ST: D Season 2 - it looks like it takes place right after the end of Season 1 - and that showcased about 9 months, so were in 2258 at the start of Season 2.

Close enough for the 1701 to wear Cage uniforms versus WNMHGB?

"The Cage" and WNMHGB had the same uniforms if that's what you're asking. They're just bypassing the pilot uniforms in Discovery. I like what they've done with the Enterprise's uniforms here. They look like the TOS Uniforms but also fit in with aesthetic of the DSC Uniforms. All they are is more colorful.

Right from the beginning, I was wondering how they would square the Enterprise with Discovery if there was ever a crossover. I didn't know if it would be able to fit together but somehow, now that I see it, it works.

I wouldn't have the collars on the Enterprise uniforms be black in this time frame but other than that I don't mind and even like their design.

"Can I copy your homework?"

"Sure just change a few things so it's not obvious"
