New uniforms in Season 2 Trailer

Discovery could have blue uniforms because they are primarily a science vessel. The more all-purpose ships use different colors.
Don't know about that. Totally different time of course but the Equinox was a science vessel and they wore different colour accents in their uniforms.

I keep trying to work out what this is all about ...

Individual ship patches and insignia, yes. I still say the different Constitution-class starships in TOS had their own service patches since the Constellation, the Exeter and the Defiant had their own unique insignia. Maybe it was a brief fad within Starfleet to give certain ships their own distinctive patches and it ended before ST:TMP and it could have been a throwback to the Starfleet uniforms of the ENT era and the early years of the Federation.

Thanks for the link, but I'm not quite sure how the Enterprise crew's uniforms are any more 'mission-specific' than the other ones.

While it’s true that “mission specific” in the example I posted isn’t quite as stark as “this uniform is too hot and heavy for the South Pacific,” there are other examples of uniform updates that are tested in a limited capacity and either pass or fail. For example, the Navy is working on phasing out it’s blue cammies (for obvious reasons IMO). It just didn’t work. There are rationalizations that make IRL sense that justify in-universe uniform changes being tested in elite (or not so elite) units. Sometimes the uniform performs so poorly (ex: Digi vs Multicam) that it is withdrawn and other times the uniform change is mandated by higher ups much to the dismay of the folks that have to wear it every day. In universe, that could be the case with the blue DISCO unis. They may have been phased out for the nu-Cage/TOS uniforms because of comfort, practicality, etc.

Bottom line is that modern services analogous to Starfleet often change uniforms based on practical (and yes, sometimes impractical) reasons and regularly test them out in a limited capacity before rolling them out to the wider service. Sometimes user feedback is considered, other times it is ignored. In the Star Trek universe, it seems that TOS-ish unis win in the end.

Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Robert Burke says efforts to put all sailors and officers in similar dress uniforms are also part of the seabag slimming project.

"Importantly, it gets us back to one working uniform, instead of the two versions that we have out there right now," he said. "For example, 5th Fleet is wearing Type IIIs now because of the heat."

*The digital desert NWU Type IIs are typically only worn by Navy SEALs and those who support them in special operations, as they contain classified features.

It was Burnham, on what I assume is the Enterprise, entering Spock's quarters.

Shock news. She is in fact Spock. She’s gonna have Ash Tyler turn her into a Vulcan boy in the finale, when we go from Alice in wonderland to Pinocchio. Klingon surgery is very effective. This has ramifications for Genesis Planet Spock of course.
(I am aware that Spock has already been mentioned etc, but this is, a joke.)

That's like half the science fiction books I've read over my lifetime.

Discovery certainly could do worse.

In fact, they should just adapt Space Captain Smith books and be done with it.
Smith, Carveth and Suruk...Saru has his name half way there already.
