M-A doesn't consider it canon, just as a valid resource because of its importance http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Memory_Alpha:Content_policy_FAQ#What_about_The_Animated_Series.3F
IIRC, TAS was only ever considered "non-canon" in the first place due to the meddlish meddling of Roddenberry's meddlesome lawyer at a time when Roddenberry was in such poor health that he could no longer lucidly handle such matters on his own! Kor
I thought there was some issues with ownership of the series, because Norway Productions and Filmation no longer existed?
Yeah, that's their line now. But only because they've dismissed the whole idea of "canon" from their content policy. Back in 2004, when this was still a live issue, they were singing a different tune: http://web.archive.org/web/20040820...olicy_FAQ#And_what_about_The_Animated_Series?
they are treating Discovery as Prime because the creators said so. But won’t use the DSC abbreviation, because it doesn’t fit with ENT and VOY
The works deemed to be an 'official' part of the universe. The term isn't original to Star Trek, and is distinct from 'continuity' which is about coherence.
Again I say... The Major 'McGuffin" of both episodes, is an Alien Species that can Perfectly Manipulate The Human Brain to see and feel anything They wish... Is it really that difficult for folks to "Head-Canon" both episodes to be a coherent whole???
Why does anyone call it the "Kelvin timeline" other than that some people at CBS supposedly call it that? It can't be an "alternate reality" because none of this is real. It's an alternative or different continuity. "Abramsverse" works as well as anything.
I use Kelvin Timeline just because the term fits so well with the category Prime Timeline and thus looks and sound better to me than "Abramsverse" did. Besides, the U.S.S. Kelvin is the location of the divergence point in history and the name of a starship of the early 23rd century. JJ Abrams doesn't exist in 2233 unless he's in computer records of early 21st century Earth entertainment. Which...knowing Trek...he very well could be. Wow. The director of two Trek films and producer of at least three or four could be listed in Federation historical files in the 23rd century. I've gone crosseyed.
