I thought there was some issues with ownership of the series, because Norway Productions and Filmation no longer existed?

Yeah, that's their line now. But only because they've dismissed the whole idea of "canon" from their content policy.

To be short, Memory Alpha considers The Animated Series to be canon.

The works deemed to be an 'official' part of the universe. The term isn't original to Star Trek, and is distinct from 'continuity' which is about coherence.

It can't be an "alternate reality" because none of this is real. It's an alternative or different continuity.

"Abramsverse" works as well as anything.

I use Kelvin Timeline just because the term fits so well with the category Prime Timeline and thus looks and sound better to me than "Abramsverse" did. Besides, the U.S.S. Kelvin is the location of the divergence point in history and the name of a starship of the early 23rd century.

JJ Abrams doesn't exist in 2233 unless he's in computer records of early 21st century Earth entertainment. Which...knowing Trek...he very well could be.

The director of two Trek films and producer of at least three or four could be listed in Federation historical files in the 23rd century. I've gone crosseyed.
