New Trek Series to begin streaming on CBS All Access in 2017

The thing I am more concerned about is what ship is it going to be set on, what time period and what universe(Abrams, Prime or a new alternate one)?

Frankly, I don't really get why some people are so up in arms about CBS All Access. It is streaming service just like Netflix, Hulu etc and no one complains about those. But suddenly when CBS offers us a show on their streaming service, it is a problem?

Seeing as how Netflix, Hulu etc. already feature shows from many networks, I would want this new Trek series to be on one of those services, instead of having to pay for something else in addition to Netflix.

I looked online at their selection though, and it's not really that bad. There are a lot of various TV series available for viewing, including the obvious all five Star Trek series. There were several shows on there not even produced by CBS.

I think they're trying to compete with Netflix/Hulu rather than just making an extension of their current network shows, and it's possible this move might help it work. If I couldn't afford both, I'd probably go with the one that has the new show I want to watch on it.

I have the same attitude about posting to multiple threads in multiple forum sections concurrently active on the same website about the exact same topic.

So I have to ask, when the announcement clearly states that "the new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film 'Star Trek Beyond,'" and I assume so too either of the other two films, why this thread remains open in the Star Trek Movies XI+ forum.

Upon a quick glance at the "The Trek BBS > Star Trek Movies > Star Trek Movies I-X" section, I don't see discussion of the various prime universe TV series there. Oddly enough, they're in the "Star Trek TV Series" section. Go figure.

Do we need an "Alternate Universe Star Trek TV Series" section, like the movies? We don't know yet.

That pretty much my take on it. It looks like Tim Russ will be disappointed. The pitch for his series most likely fell through since it was set in Prime Trek. Unless they Paramount wants two series I don't see another Prime universe Trek at least for a loooong while.

I believe the Prime universe is over, as far as live-action is concerned. New creators will pick its bones for whatever can be translated to the new series.

There will most likely be a forum established for discussion of the new series, once there starts being a significant amount of known stuff capable of being discussed.

For now, this thread exists primarily as a place from which to follow links to the main FoT and GTD threads in which what little there is to know* is already being vigorously discussed.

I think Russ picked the last bone for a while now. He gave it the old college try but the episode he made just looked like a fan production. If I were him I just would have pitched an idea. Well you never can tell with all the stuff out there today there might be room for a serious revisit to the prime Trek universe.

I don't have the comments enabled for that site, and I think I'm just as happy to leave it that way. The article does make some good points, though.

A different piece I saw this morning had another (equally valid) point to make:

Time for a captain who's a black woman, Star Trek.

She likes that Uhura's part was expanded for nuTrek movies, but thinks it ought not stop there. In part:

I saw this article suggesting, among other things, that it's time for Star Trek to feature a non-human captain. It makes sense worldbuilding-wise; the Federation is supposed to be a multicultural and multi-species society.
I'd love to see it eventually. Still... at its core, Star Trek has always been about us imagining ourselves amid a bigger universe, and understanding through contact with others what makes us human. An alien character could do that, with good-enough writing. But there's one more step we should take before we go that route:

A black woman.

There hasn't been one as a regular on the show since Uhura. FIFTY YEARS AGO. She was awesome - I like the Abrams 'verse just for showcasing that instead of sidelining her - but it's long past time for another. I'm getting really, really tired of SFF series being able (however grudgingly) to imagine black men present, but struggling to even remember that black women exist. (Or worse, ignoring black women because black men are present, and playing the There Can Be Only One game.) I have some hopes for this character to be more than peripheral in the forthcoming show The Expanse, but I guess we'll have to see. Who was the last one before her, Zoe from Firefly? Almost 15 years ago. Martha from Doctor Who? Almost 10 years ago. What, one of us gets to exist in the future once a decade?

Yeah, one significant part in SF per decade is a bit thin, isn't it?

A muslim captain would be more in vogue if the historical Trek aspiration for the social frontier is any guide. But can you imagine what would happen were they to use such a character in Chekov's place for comedic relief?
