New Trailer reveals new old character and confirms setting

I'm beginning to wonder how season two will be recorded in the annals of Star Trek lore. Will nothing we see be recorded as timeline cannon? If everything we see happen, gets erased/reset, it might get confusing to some of us old men. There are so many timelines and alternate universe offshoots already that a even a Borg would need a month in a regeneration station to make any sense of it all.

It will and just be labelled as an alternate timeline.
Memory-Alpha handles all this fine.

I'm just wondering why we need another alternate timeline where everyone's a fascist. Doesn't the mirror universe cover this concept well enough? Did someone just want to see Picard in a First Order uniform, but couldn't secure a deal with Disney for a crossover? I hope they do something interesting with the premise.

It'll be a season-long version of "All Good Things" or "Tapestry" me thinks.

I suspect they're going for something a bit different here. The Mirror Universe is essentially a universe where humanity was always evil. The impression I get is that the alternate timeline we're seeing in Picard season 2 is one which started off relatively the same as our Prime Universe, until a specific event caused the Federation to turn fascist. There are different degrees of fascism to explore as well. The Mirror Universe is basically just "I'm sadistic and Evil just because I want to be." This alternate timeline might be about desperate people seeking fascist rule because they believe it will protect them.

The concept being predicated on alternate timelines/time travel is what makes it feel trite. If a fascist Federation arose through organic events—and this premise formed the basis for a multi-season myth arc—I would love it. Sadly, the invocation of Q and timeline shenanigans renders this conceit ephemeral at best and any commentary it may hold will be diluted as a result of its temporary what-if foundation. I would have reserved the idea for a TNG two-parter, not a 10-episode serial. Either way, I'm still looking forward to seeing what they do with this.

It exists primarily to give a bunch of goody-goodys (Kirk, Spock, Uhura, T'Pol, Hoshi, etc.) a "dark side."

Seven of Nine, OTOH, doesn't NEED anything as contrived as a "mirror" version of herself (she KNOWS she has a monster lurking inside of her).
