NEW Trailer description online!

It is times like this when I miss my old contacts. This time around I've had no invitations to sets, news (good or bad)... I feel so all alone...... but at least I have my fashionable purple Spock with sombrero... is it time for my medication yet, Nurse?

Forget all your 'inside reports,' people.

I have it on good authority that, sometime in the next several months, a local private property is going to make available to me a conditional license to set foot on their property for long enough to examine this film in great detail. Said transaction will likely cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of ten dollars.

Don't hate the player. Hate the game.

I live in Pennsylvania; I "only" pay about $8.50 for a movie ticket...

...plus $8.50 for my wife...plus $8.50 for my daughter...plus $4.50 for a ginormous Coca-Cola (share the drink with the wife)...Plus $4.50 for a bottomless tub-o-popcorn (share that also)...plus $2.50 for my daughter's drink...plus $3.00 for her own popcorn (she doesn't want 'shared' popcorn)...plus 4.00 for a box of raisinettes (again, for my daughter -- but I will steal some from her)...plus $4.00 in gas...plus $1.00 toll on the PA turnpike.

TrekMovie has posted a description of what is apparently an early version of the first theatrical trailer, reported by AICN.

Description sent in to AICN

We saw the teaser trailer and then we saw what looked to be a very very early version of the full trailer – It showed more footage of [Quinto] as Spock, much more Chris Pine and also some John Cho and Simon Pegg footage. The film looks like immense fun and there seems to be a lot of action in it. There look of the crew and the bridge is spot on and the costumes look like the original but with a more modern and practical twist. We got to see Spock talking to his parent as well and Kirk being told to take more responsibility. There were also a lot of montage scenes involves spaceship battles, gun fights and hand to hand combat. I especially like a short clip where we see the crew running through the corridors of the Enterprise – reminded me of Next Generation loads.
Nice.
I'm a little bit suspicious of this.

Why?

Obviously, they could cut in all the live footage, no problem there. But I seriously doubt that the SFX sequences are done and could have been incorporated. More likely, there'd be "insert FX sequence here" placeholders for the time being.

So I'm dubious about this comment.

There is a good chance they have plugged in animatics or temporary unfinished fx shots.

Hmm £0 for me, and I'll probably see it a week or two early, but you have my sympathies

If the movie was still coming out in December, we would be expecting a full trailer (with finished FX) to be released around this time. If the FX houses are still running somewhat to their old schedules, alot of their work could be done by now.

My contact didn't tell me what they saw, but they did say it looked fantastic. I'm sure some FX were shown.

Sorry for double-post

Effects don't all come in magically on a single day; they're delivered on schedules over time. The folks putting together a trailer would work with the effects shots that are available, editing them together for best effect.

It's kind of what they do. ;)

What will make this film a success - it must catch the imagination of people, in the same strange way the TV show did. Action, adventure, nature, love, God, sex... and I'm glad the trailer seemed exciting and shows us a world that has no limits.

why does nimoy not appear? he would make a good marketing in that once the first trailer.
Or does Abrams prefer first present the new Spock and Kirk to the public?

People know how Nimoy plays Spock. We don't know how Quinto will play him. So a glimpse of which is going to get more comment and debate on the net?
Not that a glimpse of Nimoy wouldn't get a cheer from half the audience, of course.

Hey, I didn't say "that description is false," only that I'm dubious about it. Yeah, they may have a few little SFX sequences completed, but I'm sure that, given the extended release timing that they have, they've decided to use the time for good effect... meaning that they MIGHT have, say, 10% of the FX work "done." Which, of course, could be "in the trailer," I s'pose.

But the whole description just sounds a little too generic, too nebulous... too much like something someone would make up.

Everyone in the "fan community" was talking about what the teaser trailer would be like. And most were talking about all sorts of stuff that would appeal to the fan base but most likely just turn off the "general audience." I, and a few others, disagreed and thought that the teaser trailer needed to avoid even MENTIONING "Star Trek" 'til the very end... get the audience excited, get them to start thinking "I want to see this"... and only at the end spring it on them, "Oh yeah, and it's Star Trek."

By contrast, the description given in this thread is utterly conventional, generic "Trek Movie" style, as far as we can tell. I really doubt that they'll spend nearly as much time in the trailer doing something so "generic." And the thing with the effects just supports this thought process.

Doesn't mean it's not the trailer-in-process... but it would be disappointing if it were, wouldn't it?

Abrams has said repeatedly that they were sticking to the original production schedule. I believe there was something not too long ago about maybe taking a little extra time on the F/X sequences, but time is money and ILM is not going to put in an extra few months worth of work for free. I would be very surprised if they don't have a large percentage of the shots substantially completed at this point, far larger than 10% anyway.
