New To Voyager

Q called him that once.

Q: It was awfully drab, wasn't it? But this, this is a much more colourful representation for a human of American descent, don't you think? An elegant manor house, a beautiful Southern belle, a dashing Union officer determined to win her affections despite her hatred for Yankee interlopers.
JANEWAY: Enough. The only thing that interests me right now is the welfare of my ship and crew.
Q: Well, I'm sure your first officer, Chuckles, is it? I'm sure he's got everything under control for the moment.
JANEWAY: I'd like to make sure of that myself, if you don't mind.
Q: This has gone way beyond your ship. It's even gone beyond you and me. This is about the future of the Continuum itself.

Don't tell me the Q return in this series...

I love seeing Q but it makes no sense that the Q appear and Janeway doesn't bargain for their return home.

Almost every other nickname you can think of for the character is now incredibly racist.

You ever watched TOS and wondered how McCoy wasn't constantly up on charges for multiple ongoing hate crimes?

Q on Earth?

Nothing is stopping him from being a #### and going there himself to raise hell... But to actually invite Q into the cradle of the Federation, only an idiot wouldn't wonder if it's still going to be there when he leaves.

The nickname always makes me think of The Mary Tyler Moore Show episode "Chuckles Bites the Dust".

Ted Baxter: [ad-libbing an on-air obituary] Ladies and gentlemen, sad news. One of our most beloved entertainers, and close personal friend of mine, is dead. Chuckles the Clown died today from - from uh - he died a broken man. Chuckles, uh, leaves a wife. At least I assume he was married, he didn't seem like the other kind. I don't know his age, but I guess he was probably in his early sixties; it's kind of hard to judge a guy's face especially when he's wearing big lips and a light bulb for a nose. But he had his whole life in front of him, except for the sixty some odd years he already lived. I remember, Chuckles used to recite a poem at the end of each program. It was called "The Credo of the Clown," and I'd like to offer it now in his memory - "A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants." That's what it's all about, folks, that's what he stood for, that's what gave his life meaning. Chuckles liked to make people laugh. You know what I'd like to think, I'd like to think that somewhere, up there tonight, in his honor, a choir of angels is sitting on whoopee cushions.
In the episode, the rarely seen Chuckles was appearing in a parade dressed as a giant peanut, when a circus elephant went berserk and tried to shell him.

Q also called Riker "number two"...

Riker wakes up, suffering from amnesia.

Riker: Where am I?
Data
: On the Enterprise.
Riker
: What do you want?
Data: Information.
Riker
: Whose side are you on?
Data
: That would be telling. We want information… information… information.
Riker
: You won't get it.
Data
: By hook or by crook, we will.
Riker
: Who are you?
Data
: The new Number Two.
Riker
: Who is Number One?
Data
: You are Commander.
Riker
: I am not a number! I am a free man!
Data
: [laughs]

All the dvd players in aus are multiregion and I thought from what I've read it was that way in the EU too.

No, not in the New Soviet Union. I was actually planning to buy a new DVD player a couple of months ago with some hope to get a multiregion one but there was no one to find. I asked the guy who worked in the store if he could change the one to a multiregion one (obviously it's possible) and the idiot refused. Obviously he was too afraid of Big Brother.

So he didn't sell any DVD player that day. Also a way to do business.

Nice Crossover.

Hmm. Well I haven't come across one that had zones and mine have been from thrift stores for five bucks.
That, in my experience, is actually how it works: The major brands like Sony and Toshiba are all tied into companies with an interest in controlling IP on movies and music. The knock-off thrift store brands like Phony and JVSee are trying to keep their products as cheap as possible and so aren't going to take the time to bother with adding region locking to their devices, and wouldn't even if it didn't cost them money in development time because having their players region-free helps sell them. :techman:

A thrift store in Australia means second hand store, not a generic cheap store. Even the cheap brands don't come at $5 new.

I won't say all DVD players in Australia are multi-regional, but for one not to be is quite unusual. That includes the big brands. I've never had an issue buying multi-region regardless of what I wanted to spend.

A number of region specific DVD players can be "unlocked" with the right code, that's what I had to do a few years ago when I started buying imported DVDs.

Gaming consoles too... The PS2 requires that you buy a remote to unlock the regions.

Google says PS3 and PS4 does and does not.

No idea about XBox or other systems.

It's not that hard to find a region free DVD player on Amazon. I don't know how to make a PS2 region free though without soddering a mod chip. PS3 is region free for all games except Persona 4 Arena but not for DVDs.
