New Thundercats cartoon

Apparently the original series saw them eventually either recreate or re-discover Thunderra, their original home planet, and head back there to start things over. However, most episodes invovled Lion-O and company running into the Mutants' latest nefarious schemes, fighting a lot, the redhead says "Thundercats, HO!" at least once, and reset for next week. I just rewatched the original pilot episode, and IMO the show hasn't aged well. Plenty of camp, over-acted dialogue, and pre-teen plotting. In other words, exactly what it was supposed to be. :)

Watche dthe new one though, and as derivative as it is from other anime plots (did anyone else think they just re-watched the first couple episodes of "Vision of Escaflowne"?) it was brilliantly animated and very watchable to an adult audience. The magic-vs-tech conflict is interesting, and I'll keep going to see where they go with it.

The new show makes it VERY HARD to root for the "good guys". They are slave traders and tyrants....their belief in their species superiority is Nazi like...not sure what the writers were thinking. Perhaps Lion-o can correct this.

Finally saw it. It was very good. I like the new designs and direction of the show.

Pros:
- Lion-O and Tygra are brothers and have a rivalry
- Cheetara looks great
- Characters are flawed.
- Snarf didn't talk
BEST. THUNDERCATS CARTOON. EVER

I wasn't asking about the themes of the show. I was asking if the characters had an agenda besides just hanging out in their castle. Surely fighting Mumm-Ra wasn't their only reason to exist. So were they actually trying to organize a civilization, unify the planet, or what?

They went around fixing everyone's problems, fighting Mumm-Ra and the mutants, and then went over the morality of it all at the end of every episode. Basically, what the wiki said, in a nutshell. That was their agenda.

^Ummm yeah, I'm pretty sure that is the whole point of the show right now.

I hate it lol:lol:

It just doesn't have the same feel as the 80s version. In 2011, when Lion-O says "Thundercats Ho!" he's not actually summoning the other Thundercats but just using it as some battle cry. this is what irks me the most, since that was more or less the trademark of the old show. it's like showing the Simpsons without Homer saying "D'oh!":rommie:

And the feud between Lion-O and Tygra is BS, it adds little to the show.

I see no issue with a different setting, but I prefer the 80s version.

Well, Luminus cited it as a summary of the old series, regardless of where it came from.

If that's not accurate, maybe I was right. Can someone explain what the old Thundercats were actually doing on Third Earth? Aside from just "being refugees"?

The basic plot of the old series was that the planet Thundera was destroyed and the Thunderian species evacuated. Only the Thundercats (seemingly the Thunderian royalty/nobility) survived and landed on Third Earth. Mumm-Ra realised this, and wanted the Eye of Thundera/Sword of Omens to advance his own power/evil. So basically, it was Lion-O and co. trying to fend off Mumm-Ra from seizing the Sword of Omens.

This was definitely shown in the pilot movie. When Lion-O gave the Lizard person some respect and kindness, it was clear he was meant to be a different type of "cat" than his predecessors. Notice most of the "good guys" are very young (even Snarf in this case) so I see it as a case of the "new guard" taking over for the "old guard" and leading a more enlightened way of life. And even though Panthro is older, he was not part of the royalty/ruling class in quite the same way Lion-O was.
