I had a huge problem with it. The whole point of the Romulans was that they were indistinguishable from the Vulcans. In TNG, suddenly this was not the case. Even after TNG rebooted them, we saw non-ridged Romulans in ST:V, ST:VI, and even TNG-era Romulans in ST'09.
I personally ignore the ridges in my head canon, and/or interpret them as facial art like that on Nero and crew (and yes, I know the Countdown explanation for why they painted their faces).
Calling Disco, STD is an attempt at lame humor, IMHO.
I wondered why the Talosians suddenly had those awful looking ridges. Only Ruffles should have ridges, obviously. I wonder why they felt the need to update them.
Or DIS.
People have been typing it that way practically since the show was announced, much as they write STID for Into Darkness. That some people haven't noticed it isn't my fault. Trying to tee hee the STD "joke" years on is late to the lameness.

Oh, that's the precedent! It's losing that damn colon in the movies and making the titles complete phrases that did it. Never made the connection for why STD felt oddly natural when the title was first announced, even though it didn't fit with the abbreviations for the earlier shows. It's because the most recent movies were ST09, STID, and STB.
I had a huge problem with it too, for the same reason. Particularly since it wasn't a case where the design looked a lot better.
Yeah, and pretty much anyone now who uses it demonstrates a particular attitude towards the series which using that acronym telegraphs. Coincidence, right?
Knock this off - you know exactly what he meant by STD, and you don't get to dictate which acronyms for Discovery are allowed.
Using STD to refer to the show does not beach board rules, but this kind of baiting does.
All - let's move on from the endless acronym discussion. None denote haters or anything else and none are trolling.
Yes, but is rare to see it critiqued. And rarer still to see TNG taken to ask over such a redesign. Or the Trill, and on and on.
I always took it as a military and upper crust breeding thing.
You think it might be because it happened thirty years ago, so people might have kinda gotten over it? (Yes, it was a stupid and pointless change.)

Most likely because they weren’t realistic from a biological perspective. The main artists were judges on Face/Off and this was a major deal in makeup effects. The new design shows they have large brains, but that they had skulls to protect them. The originals looked like skin directly over brain tissue, which would cause damage if they even touched their heads. If you’re going to have a huge brain, you need a skull to protect it. They actually do a lot of research into anatomy and biology in order to make more convincing designs. Something that probably didn’t go into the original. They look like they have large tumors instead of brains. I keep expecting them to flop over and kill them. Now they look like a species that evolved or engineered themselves to have large brains.
